Hey guys Im new to this forum but I am working on a Formula SAE project at school and we are planning on using a single cylinder engine less than 610cc in the car. I've been looking all over and calling around trying to find the exact weight of any of the relatively new 450 4-stroke engines and everyone or everywhere I look gives me different answers. For our requirements, we need to have an engine for competion around 60lbs. If anyone knows off the top of their head how much these engines weigh I would appreciate that a lot.
Thanks,
JJ

Im not sure the weight. But...do you have any opposition to 2 strokes? I think a 500 2T would work nicely.

A 450 4S is about 75+ pounds. Weight really depends if it includes radiators, carb, coolant, oil, oil tak. That can add another 20 pounds.

A KTM 300 2 stroke could be a good option. Plenty of power and the newer ones have electric start.

The rules do not allow 2 strokes in the competition unfortunately.. But I need dry weight, no carb, no throttle body, just the engine and transmission. I know this info is limited but if y'all could help me out or know any technicians at a dealer that would be great.

A bare ex500 motor weighs about 122 dry. this is a twin cylinder street bike motor though. My xr400 motor weighed 80-90 pounds but is air-cooled.

60 pounds is going to be a problem for a 500cc engine. Some engines from the same family that are close to your target weight:
XR200 engine weighs 58 pounds bare, no estart.
CRF230F engine weighs 68 pounds bare w/ estart.
CRF230L engine weighs 69 pounds bare w/ eastart (bigger alternator than 230F).

I am also in SAE here at Florida Atlantic University. We are using an 05 gsxr 600 motor. Go with that if you want some serious power!
