Today i was riding on my little track at my house and over jumped a double. I had landed pretty hard but didnt think much of it till i went it to turn after the double stuck my leg out and noticed it was covered in oil and the white smoke of the shock oil burning of my exhaust surrounded me. I couldnt believe my eyes when i looked down and noticed this!

My bike Is an 07yz250f but when i bought the bike it had a 05yz250 Shock on it. Could that have anything to do with this happening? i have had the bike for 2 years and never had a problem so i dont think it does.
Is this a common thing?

Can you tell if the shaft is bent?  Any other wear on the outside of the shock indicating the reservoir might have been hitting something as the suspension cycled (bent down subframe or something of that nature)?

If you had all your damping adjusters cranked all the way in and kept riding the shock like that for ever and ever that might hydro-lock on the high-pressure side of the piston enough to stress the body to failure.

no i checked and couldn't find that anything was making contact with frame or exhaust. my low speed compression was at 12 my high speed was at 1 3/4 turn out and rebound was 11 out i think. I havent checked the shaft for damage yet. To be honest i dont know alot about the rear shock and have never had one apart but i will be taking this one apart as i am going to get a whole new shock off ebay.

This is what you would expect to see if you filled the shock full ofanfd bladder full of oil.  But its impossible thats the case because you have been riding it so long.   Kinda scary.

If the ls/hs compression adjuster gets plugged and can't pass enough oil that would happen -

That can happen when shock is overfilled.

Well i am almost certain the shock wasnt overfilled because it had 20 hours on it since its last total rebuild before it blew. I believe NastyR1 is onto something.
Is it possible that the fluid got dirty enough that it clogged up something and caused the shock to kind of hydro lock?

if your bladder had o2 rather than n2 and leaked into the oil the sudden compression in the shock may have lead to cumbustion..I have heard of this befor

ok well thanks for that info i will check with my suspension guy and make sure he uses nitrogen.........n2 is nitrogen correct?

nope.as i said i've heard of it happening..never seen it in person or known any one who personaly had it happen, it is physically possible though..works off the same principles as a diesle motor..
(O2) + (cumbustable substance) + (pressure) = BANG!
oil has a flash point of over 600psi of momentarty pressure, but this is easilay achievable in a shock. some where on here there is a thread on the topic.
not to mention that O2 has a tendacy to permiate rubber, causing you bladders to wear out faster if the bladder has never been replaced then this is a very possible situation..your pictures maybe illistration which i think that thread probably lacked lol

Hard to say - does there appear to be any material in the compression adjuster

Well after i took the bladder out i noticed that the top inch of an old bladder was slid over the bladder that was in the shock. The older one that was slid over the newer one was cut with what looks like a very dull knife. So it had ragged edges and pieces falling off of it. I noticed one of the small pieces of rubber that fell off of the poorly cut old bladder in the area where the compression adjuster is located.
I apologize if this doesn't make sense but this is the best i could describe it.

That glide-ring tore on extension of the shock, not compression.

The previous owner must have tried to repair the original leaky bladder - sounds like pieces of the bladder got into the compression adjuster and plugged it up - I think you've found the problem.
