i have this 2004 250x that i had running absolulty awesome. then i moved from far east texas to far west texas (3000 ft elevation increase) and the bike sat for about a month. now i CAN NOT get it to  idle. before i moved i had the valves adjusted and it was running awesome. Any ideas or recommendations to get it to idle and to set the jetting? also, i can run and jump start it no problem and when im riding, it backfires aweful when im coasting. but when i pull the clutch it will die instantly. ANY ideas? thanks!

check your jets in the carb. the one that controls the low rpm might be dirty, not allowing enough gas to flow through, causing it to die. add just a little starter fluid in the carb before you put it back together. and lastly raise the idle just a tad.  that would be my only guess. let me know if it works

First thing is to drain the old gas and put fresh in and make sure the air filter is clean. Then adjust the Air/fuel screw out
1/4 turn at a time and see if that works. Going up in elevation has leaned you jetting out. If it still wont idle take the jets out and clean them. It could be a clogged pilot jet. You may need to go up in size on the pilot.
Best if you can tell us what your elevation is now and what size jets - pilot and main, what groove the needle clip is in and what mods you've got - air box, pipe, a/p...

I would say what the others said, carb neededs be cleaned. But I thought going up in elevation would make your bike run richer not leaner....

You are correct. My bad. Less air = more fuel.
Clayba12, Go in with the air/fuel.
Sorry if I caused any confusion.

I know it does not sound related, but ANY TIME a CRF won't start, check the valve clearance before going any further. If you had to re-shim the valves, you only get a few hours run time before they zero again. It just sucks to chase a problem all over the place, then finally check valves and they are zero'd. Makes you really feel like an idiot (don't ask how I know).

Where are you? I am in Midland and can give you my settings and/or take a look at it for you if you are close to here.
