Just check the parts fiche drawing where ever you order it from, you'll be able to see the difference between the 5 and 13 spline-and yes, a 2000 should get you 13 spline. I think the best price i found was westernhonda dot com when I swapped.

Edit: I changed for the same reason you want to... 5 spline had a little wear and if you go to 13 you can do the 650R sprocket upgrade-good insurance when you're that far into the engine anyway.

Just put the Moose XRR sprocket on my '06 XRL. Even though I cleaned the counter shaft up before, I had to chamfer the splines on the sprocket a lttle to get the retaining clip on; but didn't take much. Now if I can just get it to run continuously. Have a weird electrical problem that doesn't appear to be the CDI unless I've got 2 that do the exact same thing.

just installed a sunstar CS,15 tooth sprock, 2002 xr650r. slid on easy but needed a little persuasion to allow enough grove space for the lock ring. Nothing major: tapped close all around the center hole( using a large brass bolt and hammer) a few times and it was just enough to allow the lock ring to slide around in the groove.

Test ride confirmed that it works fine and you can feel the firmness, probably since my spline showed some wear(approx 20,000miles) and with the xrl sloppy sprocket, there had to be some play which i never noticed until i changed to the xrr sprocket.

Check this site out........ it helped me to understand  why Honda put that sloppy sprocket on the xrl and the thick one on the xrr.

maybe worth if you ride primarily road
