the lt500 doesnt hold a candle to the cr500 or kx500, the lt500 will keep up with a 250 stroke dirtbike, wont even come close to a cr/kx, id put the cr500 motor in.

I had both a 1985 atc250r and a 1987 trx250r that i swapped to a cr500 motor.the cr500 motor destroyed the trx frame.the atc motor has a balence shaft.the cr500 motor doesnt. If you look close at a cr500 dirt bike frame bare you will find that its not very long and most of the vibration stress is in a vertical plane so the bike frame can take the stress better. The atc frame is close to the bike frame -not long like a trx frame. In the end I rode the old atc more than the trx becuase the trx allways had some kind of problem.I took both to pismo for a 3 day weekend once and the trx500 ran all 3 days.when I got home I started my usual maintenance and ended up tearing the trx500 completely to a bare frame and welding up 12 stress cracks.I had my buddy that helped build the 500 ride it and I rode my atc out to that big semi-flat area at the south east corner of pismo and we drag raced to 80-90 mph 3 times.the trx500 would get the atc out of the hole but at 60+ mph the atc would reel the trx500 in-less drag and a 6 speed vs 5 speed trans on the 500.The atc carried me back from boardmanville to the canal area at glamis many times at 1 or 2 in the morning without a problem. The atc had a +3" swingarm.engine was ported with an aftermarkit pipe and silencer.carb was stock-rejetted with no air box lid.The poor old atc also got to run around San Felipe on the highway and with the 6 speed running 20" holeshots you could run 55-60 mph on the highway if needed. If I was going to play with a cr500 I would just buy an old beater and put a paddle on it.A good running atc250 r is just as fast as %90 of everything else with out much headaches.

The cr500 motor is way more dependable and has more power to boot. A lot of work needs to be done to the frame tho to make is a solid rider without crazy vibration.
