I need help.  I want to sell my yz 250. i was wondering if an earlier 2000's yz 250f would be  easier to start than a 2 stroke.  My piston was set up for 165 poounds compression...is this more than usual.

If you are having trouble starting a yz250 its probably jetted wrong or has an air leak and no a 250f isn't any easier to start unless its got E start.

165lbs? From what I hear it should be around 180-220.
4 Strokes are in no way easier to start than a 2 stroke.
If you drop the 4 stroke while hot you could be kicking for hours(without hot start).

You could be next....

That moron would have started it if he would just leave the throttle alone and kicked it like a man, don't give a 4t gas when starting.  Also, he turns the choke off as soon as it starts, leave it on for a few seconds.  A 4t will start just as easy if it is properly tuned and has auto decomp.  Mine starts 1-3 kicks cold and choked, and usually less than 2 warm.  I wouldn't buy a 4t over maybe 8 years old, stay as new as you could afford.  Good luck with your venture into the mx world.

I am guessing this is a joke.  If not, your bike was hard to start because your piston and/or rings were fried.  165 psi on a compression check is really low and means it is time for a top end.  That is why it is hard to start.

The only 4 strokes that are easier to start than 250 2 strokes have a button and not a kick starter.

I told you a 4 stroke will be harder for you to start. just hit the weights and run if you want your leg to get stronger

You should totally get a 250f and I heard when you ride one you don't need a helmet or boots..  Apparently they are so extremely safe and easy to ride you can hit 120ft triples all day in nothing but your birthday suit.  Starting is easy to.  If you set up your piston for 5 psi of compression all you do is put your mouth on the tail pipe and suck real hard and it starts right up.

compression checks are bogus. there are so many factors that can make a bike change PSI by a good 10 or more PSI. no joke. move the kickstart with your hand, can you feel the compression? can you feel it get harder to move the realease, if you answered yes, compression is not your issue. even 2 stroke with awfull compression start decent. so if you answer kinda, take off the pipe, and look at the piston, is it all scratched up verticaly? does it look bad? then its time for a new top end. if you answer no, then its time for a new top end. otherwise. no your fine with the piston, and compression isnt the issue

Sure 4 strokes can (rarely but sometimes) run a long time with little to no work. But when they do (especially anything older) LOOK OUT. I have a few buddies who had 250f's (which will be significantly slower then what your used to also) and went back to 2 strokes right away. When repairs to motors get into the thousands you'll wish you had your 2 stroke.

In my opinion, I would never touch a modern 4 stroke. I had a few (a 450, a ktm 525 atv and a suped up kfx400) and except for the last one, they were a lot of trouble and all these bikes were new. Just replace a piston and rings in your bike, my kx starts up first kick every time while warm with it's fresh top end, with it's old one it took a few good hard kicks.

If you can't kick over a bike, try getting a new piston and rings, if that doesn't work take it to a good mechanic although I'm willing to bet there's no problem ... and from my experiance I've always found a good working 2 stroke starts right up while some 4 strokes I had were much harder starting.
