One of the beginner classes. Schoolboy class is usually a fast class for advanced riders

It's definitely different than woods racing.  It's a sprint, not an endurance race, so you need to be able to charge hard for 4 or 5 laps; not as easy as it sounds.  You need to be comfortable flying through the air.  You need to know when you should go for the double and when you shouldn't, but lots of jump faces are really steep and tall and you can't see over them, it's very intimidating.  You need to either ride the track a lot or have a good memory so you can remember the jumps in the 3 or 4 practice laps you'll get before the race.  MX will make you stronger and improve your offroad riding, but beware, it is addictive and racing is even more addictive.

Seriously.... Lol

Best advice :  relax and have fun, ride at your own pace.  Remember, if you ride out of your ability or comfort level, it's not like the woods......there's a chance you will get run over or landed on.

I think he's talking about going to a few "open practice days".. not the practice right before the race.

You'll pay like $20 and be able to practice at your own pace all day - I would seriously recommend this so as to not leave a sour taste in your mouth if you don't like it that much.

I also live in the Chicago area and have been riding and racing tracks in MI and IL for the past 13 years.  If you ever want to meet up and ride let me know.  I also have a practice area by my house I could give you some pointers for the track.

As being a woods rider also just getting into MX, I noticed a few things.. Along with woods, I also do a LOT of street riding, including several track days. My first trips to the MX track reminded me more of the road race course than the woods. Seriously, there is nothing about woods riding here in Missouri that will be found on a motocross track. Mega rocks to no rocks. No roots or trees either. Wide open spaces to haul ass on. Then there are the jumps. Even those reminded me of a road course blind hill top at high speed (just at not quite as high of speed :D ), rather than anything found in the woods. Motocross is on the dirt, that's about the only correlation to be found between MX and woods. Otherwise, it's a whole 'nother animal. Big speed and big fun! :)

A serious pointer.. When being passed by a faster rider, DO NOT try to get out of the way, just maintain your line and they will go around you.
