Hello all I wanted to ask what kind of work I would be in for. A friend has this bike for sale, he was in mid air when the chain came off the rear sprocket and drove through the cover and case. The bike was laid down a couple of times so the rads are slightly bent, although they don't leak they are damaged.

So my question is should I pick it up for $500?

assuming that you do all the work your self after you spend around a 1000-1500$ or so on the motor fully rebuilding it. If you go that route you will probably never make any money off it if you ever go to sell it. Did it use to run good? It sucks not being able to hear it run. And is the crankcase cracked or just the side case?

Yeah the crankcase is cracked, honestly I want it for my son who has a cr85r right now but in about a year he will need a bigger bike.

your looking at 1,000$ if you do it yourself and you want it to be reliable.. that's not a bad deal its a great bike.

You will be in for a good amount of work. As for the $500 price, you really cant go wrong. You can always pawn it off for that much if you realize you do not want to have the project, or you can part it out and make some money.

The frame is worth more than that !

I would have bought it as soon as i heard $500, but then again I live in the UK and rolling chassis go for £700 ($1050)

I would get it. You can sell the wheels alone for 200-300. Then you still have the frame swing arm pipes etc.

I don't understand where guys are getting $1000-$1500 to fix the bike. If you do it yourself you are looking at a couple hundred bucks. A used case half on ebay and a complete gasket kit. The radiators can be straightened fairly easy.

Ever heard of doing shit right the firstime?

Atleast get a service manual and replace piston/ all gaskes all seals, crank and crank bearings..... Inspect tranny replace parts if needed... Inspect clutch basket and clutch....Replace cam chain an tensioner... Inspect valves and head replace valve springs and oil seals and cotters.... Btw thatd be doing it all yourself...

Why replace a crank if it checks out fine and is still in spec? Nobody said how old the internals are on the motor? Why would you replace valve springs? As far as the smartass comment about doing shit right the first time, well I spin wrenches at the local bike shop for a part time job... I know that having a fresh motor is nice, but not necessary. The case could be fixed, and the bike could be running for well under a few hundred bucks.

Yes, you should buy it. I have bought two in the last 3 months that had blown motors and made money on all of them.

I bought one two weeks ago that the guy swore his mechanic took apart and said the whole top end was destroyed.  I took it apart it needed new valves and a cam, picked it up for 500.00 and this thing is show room clean.

If you need parts PM me i may have them.

Seems like a good deal. If you plan to replace the left center case with a new one you might check with a local dealer wrt how to buy that case. That is where the numbers are stamped.
We replaced a Left case on a bike we were the original owners of and had to provide honda with all kinds of documentation. Then it took a while for them to process it all. All in all about 5 weeks. Just something to be aware of.
