Hi

I have a 1980 XR200A.
Goes Really well, still one of my most favorite bikes to play on.

I think the stator has had it.
The electrics have been trouble for a litle while now.
I am 99.9% sure its not carb related.

Just the other day I took it for a little ride.
It ran fine a for a minute or so, then just completely died on me.
I could get it to start but as soon as I got past a certain amount of revs probably only 1/4 Revs it would cut out.

I have been told that the XR200 stators have two parts:

One for low reving
One for high reving.

Is this true?

I think I need to get the stator rewound.
Would this fix my problem?

Thanks
Adam

i think it only has two parts as in a lighting stator which puts out low voltage, and the ignition windings, which put out a higher voltage. at least on the cdi. yours might be points.

i don't think it has two stages just for ignition.

The XR stators do have two parts; one for ignition and depending on model one for lighting.  Your stator should have two wires coming out; one goes to the CDI module for ignition and the other provides AC power for lighting.    On older bikes I'm almost always suspect of a dirty carb for the symptoms you describe but there are also several other potential causes:

Dirty air filter or animal debris in the air box, check these first.

Next is a bad spark plug so I suggest a fresh NGK DR8ES-L.
Second there are a lot of bullet connectors that can become lose and/or corroded so I suggest pulling the tank and make sure they are all clean and tight, also check the ground connection at the coil.
The end of the plug wire can become corroded, the fix is to unscrew the plug boot and cut 1/4" off the plug wire and reinstall the plug boot.

Those are the easy checks, next is pull the carb and do a thorough cleaning with carb cleaner.  There are several posts about cleaning carb so do a search.

I haven't cleaned the carb in a while, although that wouldn't make sense as it runs absolutely mint some times.

I have put about 3 brand new plugs on it lately and it seems to fix the problem for about 2hrs riding time then same problem comes back.
Will run on low revs just not on high ( it does get to the point where it wont start at all).
Then I put a new plug in and it starts right up.??? ( Although only lasts a couple hours or so)
Im running a DR7ES NGK. Because this seems to run better in all the older xrs with the older stators (I have three older xr200s).

I have had 2 different air boxes on it to try and fix the problem with no luck.
I have tried two different coils with a number of spark plug leads and caps, and still no luck.
I have rewired it from top to bottom.

It just seems that when it is thrashed a bit or when it gets hot the electrics pack up.

At one stage when it was not even starting, I parked it up.
We went on holiday for a month or so and when I got back it started and ran fine for about 2-3 months.
Then back to the same problem.

Also when the problem very first arose it would still run, just not at VERY high revs like 8,9 or 10 thousand rpm.

Thanks for the response, any other ideas?

What does the plug look like when the problem occurs?

If you have 3 other old model XR200s start swapping parts until you find the cause.  The early XR wiring  used bullet connectors while 86+ used connector plugs so that limits part swapping.

Depending on model the stators will swap,
All flywheels/stators (with side cover) will swap.
Coils and CDI modules will swap.
CDI sensor and advancers interchange.
Carb all swap out but different carb models are used on different XR models.
