Mill Fire Burning in Mendocino National Forest

Release Date: Jul 7, 2012
Contact(s): Tamara Schmidt

WILLOWS, Calif. – The Mendocino National Forest is currently engaged in initial attack on the Mill Fire, which was spotted around 3 p.m. today.
The fire is located near the Mill Valley Campground in Colusa County and is approximately 150 acres.  A Type 3 Incident Team is currently working on the fire with resources coming in tonight and tomorrow.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  Forest officials are not currently aware of any injuries associated with this fire.
Mill Valley, Mill Creek and Letts Lake Campgrounds have been evacuated, as well as the Board Camp summer home tract.  Approximately 25 structures are threatened, including the campgrounds.
The road between Letts Lake and Fouts Springs, leading to Stonyford, is currently inaccessible.  Visitors evacuating from the Letts Lake area on the west side of the fire are advised to take the Miner Ridge Road to Road M5 near Cedar Camp and follow M5 or County Road 42 out.
Visitors are being asked to avoid the Fouts Springs and Davis Flat area due to increased fire traffic.
For more information, please contact the Mendocino National Forest at 530-934-3316, or visit www.fs.usda.gov/mendocino.

Yeah, was it a lightning strike, or dumbass campers?  Maybe they should ban non OHV'ers from camping in an OHV area.......just lovely, gives more ammo to the Snow Mtn Wilderness eco-nazi's to shut down Stony.....

I can see the billowing  smoke clouds from my house, this sucks..........

There are I think 5 fires in that area, and those fires are now collectively being called the Sites Complex.
None of those other fires started until today.....Hmmmmm.....Arson or (the latest buzzword) eco terrorism?

Sounds like it is burning toward and around Shagnasty and the Squid Filter trails, I'm not sure about the fire by Letts Lake though.  The news doesn't care enough to cover a huge forest fire, but the Tom and Katy divorce, well, that's some big news...

NO KIDDING!!
I dunno - Bottom line is that the dozers are probably gonna destroy some primo trails. That's what happened up in the Shasta area on a fire that I was on in 08.....BUT - people were riding that area and having fun by oh nine.

I'll continue to watch, gather and pass whater intel I run across...

13000 acres and 20% contained. Web site updated at 10:00 AM 7/10/12 with a map of the burned area
http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2998/

Also called and spoke to Ranger Station and it is really bad news.  Started about 1 mile from Mill Valley Campground and has burned towards Fout Springs taking out alot of OHV trails including all of M5, trails 31,32,35,36, 28 and more but she listed them off so fast I couldn't write them all down.

Stated that it could be a long time before OHV riding is open because the fire has taken so many forest system assets.

It is a very sad event; Stonyford is one of the best OHV places in California.

Does any one think that the enviros would go as far starting fires in an OHV area. After everything I have read I don't think I would put it past them.

I wouldnt put it past them.  To be honest after this fire I wouldnt be suprised if Stonyford is closed out for good and eventually merged with the snow mountain wilderness for "conservation" or as its being called the "Berryessa National Monument".  Great memories riding there, truly a shame.

I sure hop not, but have the same concern...2 weeks ago I was standing on top of Goat Rock looking down at trees that were burnt 10-15 years ago in that fire, and that's a glimmer of hope...
