I broke my left ankle in '06 due to being a dumbass. I was jumping a shoddy jump on my KLX400SR in tennis shoes and shorts, and the front wheel washed out. I ended up on my back, bike lying across me, with the top of my foot on the ground (mind you, I was on my back and my knee was pointing up, as normal) and the swingarm resting on my heel. Foot basically twisted around 180. It was bad. Real bad.
After that, I quit being so stupid and bought some Tech 3's and other protective gear. Since then, I have gotten married and had two kids, so I have also been riding milder just keep accidents to a minimum. The gear/cautious riding routine kept me safe up until last week. I was doing a hillclimb on my CRF450R (so much more fun than the KLX400!) and I came over the crest of the hill a little hot. The front wheel was high, and somehow the bike started leaning to the right. I went to put my foot down, but the ground wasn't there. The back wheel must have left the ground a bit, too. Anyways, by the time my foot hit the ground, the bike was leaning over pretty bad. It all happened real fast, but I couldn't save it, and my foot just sort of rolled under the bike as the bike continued its fall to the right. I was on the ground, belly down, with my right foot twisted under the swingarm (de ja vu) and the bike across my legs before I what happened. This was similiar to the first time, except I ended up on my belly, and my ankle only twisted around 90 degrees or so instead of 180.
Anyways, I am wondering if maybe I am not wearing my boots properly. The boot itself didn't twist. Just my foot inside the boot. Other than my dad, who is a casual-and-not-very-educated rider like myself, I don't have any riding buddies. Nobody has ever really taught much about riding except what I read here. When I bought the Tech 3's, I sized them according to whatever sizing instructions I found on Alpinestar's website, and bought them online. Is proper fit crucial to preventing what happened to me? Or is what happened common, even with boots on. Maybe I'm not wearing them tight enough. I will be honest...I gave up awhile back adjusting them as tight as possible. I don't know if its all boots or just the intro level Tech 3's, but they are a nightmare to snap.
Or maybe I should just have the presence of mind not to let my foot get under the bike next time I go down
