I have to ride my bike into the city today and the temp today is 101 befor the heat index. Is it safe for me to ride in that heat? I have the fan override switch but how much will that realy help.
Ill be on the highway for about 20 min then stop and go street lights for about 10-15. Is this to much heat at 101 outside?
Thanks

The DRZ has radiators, no problem. It will even handle desert riding all day long.
Enjoy
ps
do check your oil

My commute is over 40 miles and have done it numerous times in 100+ temps both on highway and in 'stop and go' traffic with no issues. It's one of the fun things about having a S.

As I understand it, as long as the engine temp stays under 230F, you'll be fine.

Where i live is constantly hi 90's or 100+. The bike has never overheated, not in city traffic or tight single track. I don't even have the fan override switch. I did get some water wetter that I will try on my next coolant change, but that's really just for piece of mind.

Here's what you really need to worry about: Dehydration. A 100 degree wind at 50 mph will suck the moisture right out of you. You won't seem to sweat because it will evaporate as quickly as you precipitate it, but a half-hour commute will leave you with a fluid deficit. Drink some water; drink a bucket of water when you get to work. If you work a blue collar job and get to wear a t-shirt; before you leave work, dump a couple glasses of water over the t-shirt in your own wet t-shirt contest ("For the love of God, man, what are you doing?); the wet t-shirt will keep your core at about 70 degrees through evaporative cooling (enthalpy of vaporization; the hot air turning the liquid to vapor loses heat energy), and your t-shirt will be dry in about a half hour as you're turning into the driveway.

what weight oil is best for hotter temps 90-100degrees? i ran 10-40 in the winter and just last oil change used 15-50, but went to local store and they didnt have it, so i had to settle for the 10-40 again, and its been 90-100 everyday lately...?

This is a good time to argue for a good quality synthetic oil. Their ability to withstand heat without breaking down is important now for the extra insurance it provides if limits get pushed. Heat could possibly lead to quicker oil breakdown so observe the change intervals.
Simply going to a thicker oil is a old mechanics trick that should be left in the museum because it can damage some new tight tolerance engines and can cause extra wear on start up, which is when most wear occurs.
With that off my chest, the DRZ has been found to work well with the 15-50 and if you can get it then do. Using a good 10W-40 will still provide engine protection. Many of the other vehicles on the road around you will be using 10W-40 or even thinner, including bikes.

Spent a couple hours out in the 105+ heat we're getting. The DRZ was fine, I was not so sure I would be however.

I ride my drz in 110 las Vegas heat in the desert, stop and go traffic, sitting at lights, top speed runs down the interstate, the works. I have no override switch or anything like that and my bike has never overheated or anything. Short point of the story. Ur fine. Cheers!
