knee injury

I injured my knee yesterday. I failed to make a step up on a rocky trail and decided to re-position my bike for another try. My bike is heavy, and while trying to yank the back end of the bike around while in a awkward position, my knee popped and bent to the inside, I hit the ground with my bike on top of me. Luckily, there was some there to lift it off me.
After getting back to staging, I iced it and was walking on it. It wasn't even that painful until I went to load up my bike. I went to climb into my truck. I stepped up with my left (good leg) onto the truck bed, and as I tried to maintain most of my weight on my good leg, I lightly pushed off the ground with my right leg there was intense pain in my knee, and I made it into the bed of my truck, laying there writhing in pain.
My knee doesn't seem to have a lot of play in it side to side or front to back, but has stiffness when extended or bent. Also, I feel some pain on the inside of my knee and there is a little swelling.
Trying to figure out what I did to it... any ideas? Thanks.

No insurance...whats the down side of trying to stay off it for awhile to see what happens?

I thought your knee would be loose front to back if your ACL was torn...

My knee gave out to the inside, my ACL was gone.

Doc told me a lot of people live without one (ACL) but the general opinion is it will lead to further knee injury, search for exercises you can do as a strong knee will be key with or without surgery. My pre op and post op PT were about the same.

ice ice ice ice ice

Not to hit a guy while he's down...You need to ice that knee and then find sometype of insurance to get it fixed properly. You must be young, as I couldn't imagine riding without health insurance.

Go to a doctor.  I could walk on mine with a torn MCL, ACL, and a fracture in the tibia.

If it is a torn ligament, you could damage the knee further and be in pain for the rest of your life.  Or worse, not be able to ride again.  If your knee is ok, you are out a few bucks.

Thanks, yes I'm icing it. I'm also doing some research on doctors for surgery. If it doesn't get better, I'm going to get a diagnosis locally, then get surgery out of country. So far, I've read good things about Dr. Charnakarn in Thailand, but need to do more research.

How much is this Thai doctor for an ACL repair?  I'd seriously talk to Doc Mark before doing anything like that.

It's around $5k plus flight to Chaing Mai...He specializes in sports medicine. Like I said, I'm researching at this time. Not sure where I would go for surgery, but I've been to Chaing Mai, and would be more comfortable having surgery at a place I'm acquainted with. Not sure about India or Singapore.

While researching, I read one post where a person was told to "pick up some ice at 7-11" for recovery after surgery! I'll try to find somewhere a little more thorough! (or at least has ice at the hospital)

Stop riding, live without an ACL for awhile, get a job that provides sometype of insurance, and then get it done by an American doctor at a hospital that has ice. I've been through this twice, Dr. Mark or Dr. Shelbourne out of Indy will have you up and riding again in 3 months.

Thanks, but it's not my acl. As far as I can tell, a torn mcl and that's it. Guess I'm lucky. I've been going to the gym and spending time on the stationary cycle. I don't know if it's psychological, but my knee feels better after spending time on the cycle. Really appreciate the info I've learned on this site.
The only time my knee really hurts is when I'm in bed rolling around. It's pretty stable, although I've learned not to push it too far. My recovery seems to be moving in the right direction.
You're correct about one thing though...I need a job w/health insurance.

If it hurts rolling around in bed get it fixed without delay!
