I will mostly be doing trails and gravel roads but I also do a bit of dunes
I need a bike that has lots of power and good feul efficiency and is extreamly reliable ,
I have narrowed my choices between yamaha and honda
The raptor 700 , the honda trx 400
All opinions apreciated

The Raptor 700 is a great bike but fuel efficiency isn't that good... The TRX 400ex is a good bike too from what I've heard... But the extra power that the 700 has is always handy!

i wouldnt reccomend the raptor for dunes. they are EXTREMELY top heavy. might i reccomend a 450? honda has one but its kickstart only, no reverse, nothin. if you want electric start with reverse try a kawasaki kfx450r. they are really nice quads.

Wrong sir! Honda has the TRX450ER. I think it was a 05-09 production run or something like that. They did have electric start, but no reverse. If you're going for a 700, go for the TRX700XX. Has everything the craptor has, in addition to independent rear suspension, high ground clearance, and the motor is based off the XR650. I'll be extremely surprised if you find a way to blow that motor up.

....."Craptor"  really kid??...nothing origanil to say?

Actually the Raptor is probably the best choice for his situation. Other than the small gas tank it is just fine at the dunes and anywhere else for that matter. One of the biggest myths is that it is top heavy, my belief is that these riders simply do not know how to ride.

........Craptor.......pa-leaze...LOL...

Thought I'd hop on the hater band-wagon for a post LOL

When saying it's best for the dunes, what CC are you referring to? I've heard that the YFZ450 is much better for dunes in comparison to the Raptor 700 for ripping around/ short rides. Whereas the 700 would be good for long dune rides, unlike the 450. Just what I've heard, not entirely sure if it's true or not. *shrugs*

I was really referring to the trx450r. the 450er never really popped up in my head at the time i was typing that. but the kfx is what id go with if i were in the market for another quad

....Well...to me it doesnt really matter. I own an '07 700 with some mods..pipe, intake, cam, controler. My son has an '09 YFZ-R with an MSD controler, slip-on...it does not have a cam or intake but, the motor is more of a high preformance unit. Both are excelent dune machines with the 700 able to pull you out of most any situation from a stand still and the 450 a better jumper and carver. Long dune rides....both the same imo...just my .02 ......

I just realized the OP is in South Africa. If the TRX400EX and the Raptor 700 are your ONLY choices, go with the Raptor. I say that while clenching my teeth, I'm a hardcore Honda guy haha. I'm only saying the Raptor because of more power and reverse.

Isn't the motor based of the XR400? I remember looking at an EX a while back, and noticed the motor looked exactly the same as the one that was in my 96 XR400. Well aside from the E-start.

Yes....I had an '05 that I used an '04 XR400 head gasket on. Also an XR250 cdi works better than the stock unit as it does not have a reverse rev limiter and has a steeper timing curve....oh..and about 900 rpm more on the top end.
