What are some rules of thumb to go by when performing maint. on an off-road bike? Preferably something that applies to all types. But also rules of thumbs for MX specific bikes, enduros, or trail?
I'm having trouble writing about "bike maint." for every type of off-road bike since there's so much variation... and I need something to say.

If the airfilter looks dirty. it needs cleaned and re-oiled.
If the tires look low. they need air.
If your monster and metal mulisha stickers are coming off. It's meant to be.
Hopefully that helped some bro-to-crossers haha

Check out:
-Air filter
-Oil levels
-Chain tension
-Sprockets
-Chain rollers
-Cables for stiffness
-Smell of gas tank (If it smells dead or not, that way you can tell if it's been sitting for a while)
-Fork seals
-Any rust spots
Pretty much anything that can be checked out without taking stuff apart is what you need to look for, or go over. Grease all bearings, etc.

Should probably be actively listening for squeaks, squeels, or grinding sounds, lol....could be nothing, could be something.

dont piss in the gas tank?
Ahh yes...... the old pissing in the fuel tank is a sure fire way to upset the air fuel ratio. Some would even consider it to be piss poor maintenance. Ohh HA HA......HA

If it doesn't move, force it.
If it breaks, then it needed to be replaced anyway.
Not sure who said that but I like it.
