Hi iam new to this KTM section, just brought a 2009 300 EXC today but there will still be a few weeks till I get it, but it was so cheap that I couldnt say no. There however is a couple of things with it, the hour meter doesnt count nor the speedo, so really dont have a clue of anything. I do know the guy who have it very well, and I know his good to his bikes, he always grease everything as it should, and changes the oil before and after each race and so on..
But do I have to worry about the hours? How often do you guys change piston? right now the ODO says 2100 km or about 1300 miles and the hour meter says 57.7.. Cold it started after 3 kicks with the choke on and there is a lot of compression.. Oh yea and one more, are there any permanent fix for the e-start not engageing right? as I understood the fly-out wheels on these are no good..
Cheers!

Ok one less to go, wasnt lucky on the earlier searches .. The e-start can be fixed with a new model Bendix KTM Part#: 55140026100
And do the vent mod and oil mod..

Thats not many hours ... depending on the application and the rider. Congrats on the new ride.
Personally, I would just throw in a new top end to have a ZERO start point. Its cheap to do. Having said that, there is still lots of life left (unless the previous owner "lived" riding the pipe). Some people are proactive (replace before needed) and some are reactive (wait till it breaks or needs it). Decide what type your are and go from there.

... he sells rebuild kits for the e-starters for $78. The wet mod volume of oil is a bit less than indicated on the video. Just search wet mod.
PS ... he is also the guy who made those videos on the wet mod. You can basically buy everything you need (complete top end) from Jeff all in one stop.

Thanks! Yea well the top end service i thought about just getting done as you say. But iam also thinking about a total rebuild, but it might be overkill. Any clue on how many hours before a total rebuild is needed on these?

Total rebuild seems overkill . . . if it feels tired, put a new top end in it, give it a good once over, clean the PV, carb, etc and ride the hell out of it.

Nice bike. Congrats
57 hours is nothing on a 300... Just GO' RIDE
I have removed my e-start, on my 2011 - 300 EXC:

The speedo... Could be the sensor, or the magnet that's missing. Easy fix.
