Seems like every time I start a x country the first 15-20 min I'm out of breath. After I get into a grove (after about 1/2 to 1 hr ) i don't even think about my cardio. I run about 20 min a day 5 days a week and ride at least 1x. 50 years old and in ok not great shape. My question, why is the first 15-30 min so hard on me when after that I'm fine and riding just as hard. Second question, how do I train to help this

Sounds like your pumped up and anxious/excited, best bet is to try to relax.

Ya I was thinking of that but I'm 50 and been in lots of races over the years and probably are more relaxed than ever. Seems like when I ride for fun I'm a lot better after I'm warmed up as well. Maybe try and have a fast ride before the race to get me over the hump. Not sure. I'm I the only one who gets this?

I have the same problem. Do a few dozen jumping jacks before the start, get your heart rate up before the race and it will help. Think about it this way, you are going from somewhat of a resting heart rate to max in a matter of 5 minutes. There is a reason the pros have rower/spin bikes/mt bikes at their rigs before the starts.

Racing Sunday and will give this a try. Makes sense to me. Like I say once I'm warmed up I'm fine.

Just like with every other strenuous activity, the body needs to "adapt" to it gradually. If I ride immediately from a resting heart rate or inactivity, I get to feel some tightness in my chest too, which is why I made it a point to do some exercises prior to riding (as long as circumstances permit me to). In my case, as long as I don't do a sudden shift in activity, I do fine.

Went for a 15 min jog about 30 min before race. Did as much movement before race but hard to get heart rate waiting 10-15 min on the line. Still helped a lot in the first lap   Thanks for help
