Less braking, more gas, more standing up

relax and make sure you are looking for enough ahead. Staying on the gas slightly even when you are coasting helps prevent the front end for pushing or sliding out in corners. When i sit in sand i like to be right up against the tank. If you have to put  a leg out in a corner you have to keep it up and in. The faster you go the easier it is to stay stable in sand.

keep your weight back off of the front tire, ride loose and stay on the gas.  When you let off of the gas and let the front tire drop down into the sand is when you have problems.  As far as cornering, dive in hard and stay on the gas hard, you can rail corners in sand, but you have to stay on the gas.  Good luck.

All good advice.  Often you don't actually need your brakes at all entering sand corners, and you STILL have to charge is harder than you would on hardpack.  The sand is just constantly sapping your momentum.  It's better to have speed and maintain it then it is to slow down and then try to speed up.

As for tires, the Pirelli MXS is like cheating it's so good.  I don't really find that the front tire matters as much.

You can ride a heck of a lot more aggressive in sand, at least when it's smooth in the mornings....

Keep in mind the sand slows you down when you let off the gas, so you can come in faster brake later and get on the gas sooner and harder. If it's nice and deep (and wet) don't even worry about finding a line. You can just powerslide all the way around the corners; Come in fast, tap your brakes to break the traction and at the same time lean it over and pin it while slipping the clutch out. Before you know it you'll be counter-steering and WFO around the corners.

Yep, all the tips above are spot on!

Pirelli MX32's are the tire you want, don't even balk at the price (they are expensive), but amazing tires! :ride:

Where about's are you from Crystal?

Sand is crap till you learn how to ride in it, then it's is actually very nice to ride in I think. Also if in doubt power out! Taking the shortest line around corners seems the go too. Have a watch of these, might be of some use to you or some else.

Good luck with your race.

Awesome post.  I hate when people say, "lean back and pin it".   That's crap riding right there.

Great videos, I was going to post them, I actually raced at that track (rosebud) on Saturday, my first time racing in sand and it was so good, everyone here is pretty much spot on if you listen to what they wrote you will be fine

If the sand is really deep you can pretty much forget about your brakes, the sand will slow you down.  In the corners, staying in a rut is not nearly as important as it is with a clay track.  In sand, you can pretty much make your own run if that one doesn't work out for you.  Good tips about trailing the throttle, especially on a 4 stroke if there's a good deal of engine brake.  I would run a filter skin, again, if the sand is deep.

One of the main things is just have fun with it.  Railing a deep sand berm just right is one of the best feelings you'll have on a MX track.

Best wishes.

A little vid of a nonpro kid riding in the sand. You can see his body position shifting from soft to medium surface. Pretty tough track for a mini, but if you can ride this stuff...........
