Cortisone, with torn rotator cuff......good idea?
Posted 13 June 2012 - 07:25 PM
Im on a diet of Tramadol, Naproxen and Voltaren as of now until I get the official diagnosis next week. What im doing right now seems to help but im thinking I need to move to something a little stronger. When I go to see the doctor im thinking about mentioning Cortisone. I have been doing quite a bit of research, Cortisone looks to be a good idea but im curious if anyone has on TT has tried it!?
Any thoughts?

My husband tried one - he didn't get any relief from it at all, but he really didn't want the surgery either. In the time you get the shot, wait to see if it is going to do any good (or not), then decide to have the surgery, then get it scheduled, you could have already had surgery and been on the road to recovery. In my husband's case, he had bone spurs, rotator cuff tear, torn labrum and a shredded bicep....
The doctor told me I needed knee replacements, but offered cortisone shots in the meantime.... I said no thanks to the shots.... just a band-aid to mask the problem.

However when it comes to an injury such as a torn rotator cuff I don't feel it is the best method of treatment.
You see, as has already been posted, multiple injections can weaken connecting tissues...and yours are already weakened from the tear.
I would suggest that you consult with a doctor, remain on NSAID medications to reduce inflammation, and alternate hot and cold.
Rotator cuffs never truly heal all the way. It took me weeks to be able to lift my arm more than shoulder level. It took months for the pain in it to be tolerable without at least over the counter pain reducers. Years later it still bothers me from time to time, mostly during over head lifting. You're just going to have to be easier on it.
Good luck.

I damaged my shoulder when I was 17 in a fall. Over the years I have seen several orthopedic surgeons that never wanted to do surgery. They said that the chance of improvement was not high enough for them to operate on it! Had a couple of cortisone shots "with a 4" needle" it did help for a while, sometimes for a couple of years, but this was never going to be a permanent cure.
In 2008 at the age of 50, I found a surgeon that was highly skilled in shoulder Reconstruction so this was the "LAST TIME" I had to go through 6 to 8 months of rehab.
I can not give enough praise and thanks to Dr. Mark Field for completely fixing my left shoulder (I'm left handed by the way). This is just my personal story.
I know this is totally Dependant on your personal condition and it is not possible for us to give you good advice, so use your Dr., or get a second opinion form another Dr. but us dirt bikers have no business playing Dr.

I would forgo the coritsone, they gave me a shot in my wrist and I could ride mx without numb hands for a month but the tendon pain I am having from it sucks! It is very damaging to tissue
