can a new(different brand)crank cause a jetting issue?ever since i rplaced the wiseco crank i have been having a lean idle surge and a bit of dieselling when comming from high rpm.Ihave new main ordered to try but it ran perfect before crank change.Iknow first thing is possible air leak but it has been apart twice since then with new gaskets each time and its still there.

Not in my experance but I have had seal issues not related to crank brand but related to splitting the cases. Pull the ignition flywheel and stator and the clutch cover and primary drive gears and then pressure test and sprey soapy water on every thing in the seal area and look for bubbles.Good luck.

new seals put in when split first time, checked them second time I split the case whick was only 1 weekends use and they were fine.I even had new bearings and seals bought just incase.I can recall the bike doing the same thing when the OEM crank was in before the wiseco, then I put the OEM back for a weekends use and it started again. Now I have a new hotrods and its still there but not as bad.Seems lean on the main to me so I'm gona change the main to a 162 when it arrives but in the mean time I'm gona raise the needle a notch.

raised the needle and it made a nice difference on the mid to top end but I can't get the idle proper. The surge at idle is less but if I adjust the air to get idle good its back.Bike is crazy with power much better than I remeber and seems to pull longer on top, just that damn idle. new carb boot comming too if I can't get her straightend out with jetting then its time for a leak down test, just have to build 1.

looks like i'm splitting cases again, fourth time in a month.Must have nicked a seal or something, can't get it running right.Tonight It seems like shes burning tranny fluid, not the same smell from the pipe and more smoke than usual. Its constantly surging comming down from high rpm even with fatter jetting. Its either a seal or the case sealant, thought I was finished with this engine for awhile.Oh well weekend project again, good thing I bought a spare set of mains and seals.

all apart again and the seals look fine,I don't get it.I'm using all balls crank bearings and seals has anybody had issues with these seals?Another thing I noticed that wasn't like it when the wiseco was installed and it happened with the temp oem I ran for a weekend and now with the hotrods I just pulled apart, the tranny side bearing and crank half has a brownish film on it allmost thought it was rust at first.I can wipe it off but it isnt on the stator side.It was there last time I pulled it apart too.Im gona change the seals and bearing again allthough they look good just to be sure. The case sealant looked good no obvious signs of leaking,so its down to seals, base gasket or carb boot. This is really starting to annoy me,i'm very close to selling this and getting a 4 stroke.

I going to say bad right side seal with the slime you found on that side by the seal, but it could be anyone's guess

Right, because a four stroke is sooo much easier to take care of.

It does sound to me like your crank seals were leaking. All Balls bearings and seals have gotten a pretty bad rap, but I have never personally had a problem with them. If you're concerned, I would just go with OEM bearings and seals.

4 stoke I meant was not a race bike, more like a crf230 or xr400 along those lines. They run forever with very little maintenance.

Yup, that's a valid point. They're also heavy and extremely boring to ride compared to a 2 stroke.

Keep going along the path your going. You'll get it sorted and when you do you will have a fun and lightweight bike that is a blast to ride and easy to maintain. I believe your new mains and seals will take care of the problem for you. It's easy to get frustrated with a bike and decide to get rid of it and grab something else, but more often than not you're just trading one set of problems for another. All bikes are going to need attention at some point.

had her out for a spin and the damn idle surge is still there, not as bad but its there.I can't see anything else that would be causing a leak other than the carb boot.I have a new one on order that I will try.I'm starting to wonder if timing could cause this, the wiseco cranks are known to have the timing off from the woodruff key being not cut in the right spot.Heres the history again when I bought the bike it did this lil surge at idle same as now,I used it for a year then I had a new cylinder (265 kit) and bought the wiseco crank. The bike ran good after this but it had detonation so I adjusted the timing back and it cured it.Wiseco gave out this spring andI wanted to go riding so I reinstalled the OEM for that weekend while I waited on the hotrods. The surge came back with the oem and is still there with the hotrods.I have had this engine apart 4 times within a month and installed new seals and bearing twice and its not making a difference.I'm stating to think it has something to do with the crank itself if thats possible.Bike is crazy with power,4th gear with a 13/47 gearing it will still power wheel the front when it gets traction, over rev is great and the throttle response is smooth,in fact I think this is the best its worked since I had it.Its just that annoying idle surge,if I'm cruising the trail and pull the clutch in to coast when the idle gets close to where it should be it will surge a second and maybe do this a couple times before settling to normal. It does idle fine once it settles,if the carb boot dosen't fix it the I don't know where to go next.I could play with the timing but I like the way it runs now,its a beast, everytime I go for a ride my arms ache after.sorry for the long winded post and if you manage to read through it all maybe you can shed some light on it for me,Im willing to try most everything.
