I went down yesterday coming out of a corner and my hip nailed the handlebars. Right away I couldn't move my left leg without extreme pain, I had a guy try and pull on it to put the femer back in, but it didn't go. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced, the ride to the hospital was torture.

The doc said it's pretty rare that a younger guy dislocates his hip, it takes an extreme force, usually from auto accidents to do it. Anyone ever had this happen? when can I expect to ride again? I'm limping around today, not much movement but I don't need crutches to walk.

I'm 31, and dislocated my hip and fractured my acetabelum back in November. Same deal as you, caught on the handlebars and extreme pain and the doctor told me the same exact thing he told you. Said its usually only in auto accidents and not usually with guys my age and in my health. It was a week for me before i could actually walk and i waited 4 weeks or so before riding again. I can tell you that when I first got back on the bike I've never been more scared to hang my leg out there in a turn haha. Now the only time it bothers me is when its about to rain, but I think thats more from the fracture than the dislocation.

Wow I thought this was a pretty rare injury but its crazy how similiar our situations were.  I'm icing it and trying to stay off it as much as possible for the next couple days.  I think I can go to work sometime next week, once the swelling goes down.  Would you say you made a full recovery, is riding, running, exercising and stretching like it was before?  Does your hip ever fill tight?

I'm feeling pretty good almost a week after the accident.  I'm using a hot pad on it now and doing range of motion stretches.  The doc said arthritus and Avascular Necrosis (femur head dying) are the biggest concerns.  A second dislocation is pretty rare because the hip socket is much deeper then the shoulder and has more ligaments surrounding it.

I didnt dislocate my hip...Mine broke the head off the femur and cracked my hip and my pelvis...Had to have surgery to srew the femur back together and to put pins in my hip. They said the pelvis was a stable fracture so they left it alone. They told me the same thing that it took a great amount of force to do this much damage. I am now with a walker for the next 8 weeks and cant put any weight on my leg at all. They also told me of the arthridic risks and of the femural head dying...I dont think i like the sound of either of those as the fix for it is a hip replacement.....I hate to say it but This one might be the end of my riding career

There is a good chance you tore your labral cartalage during the disloacation.  The torn hip labrum is a injury becoming more "mainstream" among professional athletes....shoot even IT, Cary hart, and others in the moto world have had or are getting repairs.  I had a othroscopic hip repair performed two years ago.  In fact the pioneer of this surgery for the world is located in aspen CO.  he did rodriges's hip, and all the big athlete names.  I had one of his understudies who mentored under him do mine, it was truley a life changer for me.  Come to Denver, see him is what I recomend....because the surgery was pioneered in Aspen, this is a good place for hip issues!  PM me if you would like his info he is incredible!

UPDATE: 2 weeks after the dislocation I was jogging on it.  3 weeks later I raced on it.  I've had full range of movement since about 3 weeks out.  It feels about 90% right now.  I sure hope the femur head is ok and I'll look into that labral cartilage on my next check up in 2 weeks.  Thanks guys!  Sorry to hear about your injury mx159 I hope you heal fast, and I think once things get going and you get movement back then it will go by faster.

I had a similar accident back in 2002 where I broke the head off my left femur on a guided ride down in Scottsdale AZ.  I had to be airlifted out of the desert.  Dang bald tires on that rented DRZ400s!  The percentages they gave me for full recovery were very alarming to say the least.  I still have the 3 screws in there but everything healed up good.  I still ride, but a bit more cautiously I must admit.
  Hang in there grumpy_mx159!

Yes I have been to an orthopedic surgeon. I am finally starting to walk about 3 times a week without crutches. It has been a long road. I just can't wait to get back to work and riding again. Unfortunately the riding probably won't happen until next march.

I dislocated my femur in a pretty bad crash back in 04. Mine pulled out and went into my butt cheek. It was the worst pain ever. I was stuck in the fetal position cause my leg was stuck.  I also broke my colar bone, concussion and bruised my heart and lungs. I was in the hospital for 4 days. After I got out I was on a walker for a week, crutches for 4 wks, and a cane for 3wks. Every once in a while there will be a sharp pain in there like a nerve of ligament is getting pinched. Other than that it has been good
