I have been researching a green dot trip with the kids to Joe Watt canyon. In doing so I came across a bunch of mountain bike videos. It appears to me that the mountain bikers have cut single track all over the valley and use it with no interference from any authorities. I can guarantee those same mountainbikers would flip if they ran into me and my bike on those trails. I am very tempted to try it out and see if they realize that reporting me will likely get them shut down as well since they are no more legal on those trails then I am.

ride it.

If they give you crap / run into a MTBer tell them your from the state inspecting WTH is going on. Then ask why they are there on illegal trails. Turn that rant into opportunity man.

Don't tell them you are from the state, they may ask for official ID.  Instead, tell them that you are a Forest Service volunteer and you are inspecting the area for fire danger.  While you are at it, take out a notepad and ask them for ID, and if they ask why, tell them you need to report any illegal activities that you happen to witness.  That should shut them up.

This would probably work even better with a friend to ride with, but probably won't work with little kids in tow.

Hopefully we will all figure out sooner than later that mountain bikes and motorcycles need to be on the same team.  Future closures and restrictions are going to hit them just as bad as they hit us.

But you are absolutely right about the differences in how we are treated. Yep, there are several spots in the valley (Kittitas) where mtn bikes have been cutting new trails.  If dirt bikes started doing that, I can guarantee we would be stopped in a heartbeat.

I doubt that! mountain bikes are seen as clean and green and dirtbikes are seen as dirty and destructive. mtn bikers have gained TONS of ground at the expense of dirt bikes ( see tiger mtn, and green mtn ) ....both built by DIRT bikers and our $$. many other examples of the bike community commandeering OUR trails as their own and successfully getting us kicked out and zero instances of the other way around.

My Dad and his buddy worked at Northwest Airlines and rode trails outside the rules wearing work raincoats with big NWA on the back.

They just told people they were with the National Wildlife Administration.

Never got crap for riding out of bounds and learned about few good fishing spots in the process

I'll bring my green bike and we can tell them it's a FS bike (albeit plastered with skulls!). Be happy to explore the area. MTB site says May to June. Prolly explore it outside that timeframe.

Heck, in the Wenatchee Valley, the FS has more of a war against mountain bikers than dirt bikers. They're constantly trying to rehab and close trails the mountain bikers make. As locals, the mountain bikers and dirt bikers get along pretty well. Aside from talking trash, going riding with them, smoking them down a trail, then turning around and going up even faster. Of course followed up by beers and more trash talking at South. All in good fun, we're all friends from way back that just diverged years ago at the choice of whether to have a motor in our bikes or not. Guess the downside of larger population bases or not riding local is not knowing those folks. I feel for you city dwellers.

I rode some obscure trails I know at Gifford Saturday. These trails are motorcycle trails and hard to find / out of the main area but still categorized MC. Much to my surprise after clearing and riding these trails for years I find a new sign and the trail is all groomed and there is MTB man made jumps everywhere. WTH... really? So i'm sure it will only be a matter of months / years before the "no motorized vehicles" signs posted. The MTB takeover off all our trails pisses me off. I see it big time in Hood River now see it creeping into Gifford. Pisses me off. I'm all for sharing but that crowed just wants to take trails we built and push us out. It would be like us going over to trails they made and ride and just blowing them out and posting "no MTB signs" Game on.

Suggest you smash them down else USFS will declare trail unsafe similiar to what WDNR did. Same story. Dirt bikers kicked out, MTB move in, MTB make jumps, somebody reports it, DNR obliterates improvements, now trail is closed to MTB for a while too.

Srsly, I'll meet you at said trails with sledge hammer in tow.

There is very simular situation brewing over here on the dryside of the state. There is a new hikeing/biking/horse trail being proposed . http://www.williamod...rg/trail.html   In order to save money they are using several established motorized routes. In the Naches Dist. the 1127 M.C. trail the 608 4wd. trail and the 1126 M.C. trail just to name a few. Also a bunch of greendots in DNR and other F.S. roads. They are partners with the WTA which is a group that is definitively anti motorized. http://sportsyakima....il-set-to-open/
I cant wait to run into a few of the enviro wackos that are waiting for the opportunity to kick us motorized users off our own established and legal trails because our existence on the trails they like to use inconveniences them.

Hey if it is a established M.C. trail I say ride it!  The MTB crowd should expect nothing less then a motorcycle on a motorcycle trail. They have no right to bitch. They built things on our trail with out our permission and that is flat disrespectful . Don't F around in my house!
