I typically go with the 2:1 ratio.  But like many others have stated, it really depends how fast you are and what kind of riding you do.  The Californian desert eats tires for breakfast....no matter what compound you run
That's where I have an advantage on most of you guys. I ride mostly in soft powdery sugar sand, so my tires last a LONG time... :ride:

As soon as the sharp edges are gone I change mine. Feels like I lose at least 25% of traction when the edges get a little rounded.
My buddies that are willing to run a slightly worn tire love me, because I donate them all the time!

I ride in shady woods trails, where the ground is almost always moist or wet, it seems like the front tire is going to last forever. I have had the same tire since i bought the bike, and the owner had put 2 new tires on it and the lines on the center tread are still there. The rear one is losing tread quick, too many rooster tails on gravel roads.
