What would you guys say the best mx250 two stroke for the woods would be.

I've heard that two strokes are coming back and more and more people are buying them. I know they are lite and monoverable in the woods and that's the opposite of my KTM 450exc in the tight stuff although KTM 450's aren't that bad they still can wear you out by the end of the day. So I'm looking at the options of a lighter two stroke. If they sold ktm xc were I live I would get that but they don't.

.what are the main modifications that people do to these 250's in the woods
.What bike would have to have the least mods done to it.
.which would be the most expensive
And do they even perform well in the woods

Go easy on me guys this is my first post

Too bad you cant get your hands on one of the KTMs. I haven't tried one personally but I hear they're already pretty much set up for woods. Any of the newer name brand 2 strokes will handle pretty good and have plenty of power. Just pick a color you like! As far as mods go put a heavy flywheel weight on to smooth out the power and give it a "tractor" pulling feel to it and some good barkbusters to protect your hands from the trees that sometimes pop up out of nowhere. Those are the necessities. Anything else is up to your discretion

Thanks guys I think I will go with orange ktm has always been good to me
With the fly wheel weight is this necessary when racing grass track and enduro I don't what to dull my power if I don't need to.

i wouldn;t bother with a flywheel weight unless u really feel like you need it. newer two strokes are actually a lot better down low than people seem to think.

Lots of people race either the ktm 250 sx or xc, and the yz 250

Edit: As far as mods, most people run the fmf gnarly pipe, new reeds (take ur pick), flywheel weight, rekluse, and barkbusters.

Thank guys very helpful information  I think I will just get a KTM 250sx and just see how it goes with the bark busters, pipe guard, bash plate and a fmf gnarly pipe. After I race it for a bit I will know if it needs a flywheel weight or not. Thanks again guys.

Haven't ridden an 05-07 KX 250 lately have you? Monster motors but mostly mid and top. On the other end of the spectrum, I had an 89 KX 250 that had the bottom of a 4 stroke.

For a mx 250.. either a yz250 or a cr250... 02 to 07 cr250 is great... little smoother power and handle awesome... just. A simple 51 tooth rear sproket will give u all the torque you need with it too. They lack bottom end stock but th gearing change will help a ton

02-07 cr250 I mean

Ktm250sx is nice... but its all mx like the cr and yz. The xc is a trail oriented bike.. the sx just has a harder hit, closer gears, stuff like that.. with stiffere suspension.. all mx bike that you would have to set up for trails.

The xc is similar to the sx but with lower gearing, differnt pipe, kickstand, differnt ignition for lights, heavier flywheel, 18 inch wheel

And softer suspension... then the xcw is just like the xc but with a wide ratio gears.. but ya for a mx bike I would go cr or yz

Can this be done and is it worth doing to the sx

Please go to different 2 stroke forums and put a TT search on the mx bikes made to go for trail. It's such a common question and lots of info is already out there. A cr ,yz, rm, kx,sx and of course the gasgas and husky and other great bikes are all very capable and excellent with just a few mods.. Usually it's just bark busters, gearing and a flywheel weight with skid plate.  I really don't think your choices need to only be between a ktm and yamaha although those are excellent bikes.. It's just that all the brands are easily adapted these days and I'd say it's more of what's the best deal that comes before you . I like the what color do you like line. I think it's most appropriate.
