A bunch of left kick TE610 engine/clutch/timing/starting related questions

I have a bunch of questions about my 1996 Husky TE610.
I bought it about 2 years ago as a running bike, it was a bit hard to start but i eventually discovered that the choke wasn't coming on properly and after that it wasn't too bad to start.
I eventually pulled the timing chain out to replace it and ended up doing a few other things to it, the clutch basket was cracked and coming apart so i replaced that, i replaced the oil pump reed and so on.
I damaged the stator (through my own retardedness) and had to replace that too.
Now i've more or less got it back together but i can't get it to start. I've done the following:

Replaced the timing chain, i've set the cam correctly so that it's gear is horizontal when the piston is at TDC.  The manual says on the compression stroke but since i'm assuming the bike is running a wasted spark anyways and that the compression stroke will be determined by the cam's position anyways i just put the piston at TDC and set the cam from that.
Correct?

I'm having trouble setting up the clutch, the little adjuster in the centre of the basket i can set so the clutch is either engaged, or if i wind it in far enough the clutch is disengaged.  However i can't find the middle ground where the clutch is engaged with the lever out, and disengaged when the lever is in.
Am i going about this the wrong way? (note i've been trying to start the bike in neutral, with the lever in, however the clutch is probably still dragging somewhat? probably won't help me with starting?)

I pulled the carby apart and gave it a quick clean (it seemed quite clean inside anyways, so i just wiped it all down with a petrolly rag), the choke doesn't seem to come on very far though.  Flick the lever and the choke section slides up but it doesn't open the choke hole more than a crack.  I tried shimming the cable up (it was out of adjustment) so that the choke opens more but i'm probably only getting the choke hole half open.  Is that enough?

Do i need to prime the carby or anything or do i just throw it back on and put some petrol in the tank (that's what i did).

How do i set the ignition timing?  I've got a new stator, the old stator had a scribe mark on it, which was lined up with a scribe mark in the casing.  The new one does not, so i've just set it in the middle.  I'm assuming that if i have this wrong the bike will be extrememly hard to start?

If i spray aerostart/start ya bastard etc into the carby (with the slide open) and then try and kick the bike it doesn't fire.  Suggests to me it's an ignition problem.  I do get a spark when i try a plug in the lead and kick the bike though, so it seems like timing to me.  But that's just what i think,

Any other tips or tricks anyone can offer me?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh yeah when i put the rocker cover back on (i just took it off to check the cam timing) i'll reset the valve clearances as well, if my housemate's XR400 is anything to go by when the clearances are out it's a bit of a pain to start.

Hi  , Yes the clearances are critical,
look at "tators rebuild "for a lot of the info you need,
timing , clutch etc,,  Cafe-H also,
