one of my old cycle mags did a test on recovery drinks and energy snacks. Funny thing was the tradition of milk for recovery, and fig newtons for ride snacks showed to be basically the same thing.at a fraction of the cost.
Milk, especially chocolate milk is quite a good replenishing drink after work outs with weights where extra protein is needed for recovery and muscle rebuilding (lots of protein and amino acids). The sugar found in choc milk is jut enough carbs to get the metabolism going.
But for simple recovery, where dehydration is the major component, water is still the best. Maybe throw a banana in there for good measure and help prevent cramping.
Your Brand X hydration drink is usually quite adulterated with sugars, caffeine, and a huge excess of other things you don't really need (and pay for). I use to race for Gookinaid E.R.G. and learned quite a bit about electrolyte replenishment. Your body will replenish itself quite fine if you are on a healthy diet and keep yourself hydrated.

I'd say this guy has special needs.
I used to race bicycles (past Nat Champ, Jr. Worlds, Pan-AM Games, alternate in the road team in '84,etc), one of my buddies always had a huge nocturnal cramping problem. His fix was fructose. Most people's fix is potassium or sodium, as well as being hydrated.
I sometimes have a huge cramping problem in my groin from long (+100 mile) off-road rides from holding onto the bike with my knees while standing. To help with re-hydration I sometimes take some ibuprofen (but not to exceed recommended dose, usually 3-4 250mg pills). The ibuprofen thins your blood and helps you get rehydrated. But you got to be careful with ibu, it can damage some internal organs.
