Hey guys I got a quick question. I always get blisters when I ride. I have been riding for 6 years and it's almost a routine everytime I go out. It there anything special you guys might use to minimize the risk of getting them? Any palm pads? Or do you all tough it out like me? Just curious after getting 2 handfuls of blisters today I thought I would ask.

EDIT: After re-reading this I realize I said I get "handfuls". Didn't mean it. Oops. I rarely get blisters on the base of my fingers, but they are very small and callous over within a few minutes. I usually take off my gloves and most pop while riding, or I do it myself. The only real blisters I get are on the inside of my thumbs, especially my left. I will get different gloves and grips very soon. And in the meantime I will buy some tape and try it out. Might work who knows. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Try different gloves.
Try loosening your grip.

I carry some athletic tape for wrapping fingers/hands when I start to feel hotspots.

Try different grips and or gloves...or try and not hold on so tight!

I don't hold on as tight as some may think. At first I do and then as I go along I loosen up. The problem is probably my grips. They are worn and I'm better off gripping the bare metal bar. My gloves are almost brand new, nothing spectacular, but new.

New grips are always sweet. But you probably need some different gloves. Maybe yours are a little too big? Or the material isn't agreeing with your hands? My hands are all calloused up so I rarely get blisters.

Get gloves with a one-piece palm... (No seams at the base of your fingers)
And get the smallest size possible. Made all the difference for me. No blisters since I switched gloves.

And ride a lot more....

I used to get them all the time and I did all the tricks (the best gloves, one piece palm, tried different grips, tried relaxing my grip) but still got them.  The best thing I found that helped, but didn't prevent them, was to use medical tape on the affected area before a race.  I had trouble with the inside of my thumb,  and a little on my palms

I put some Goldbond on my hands before I put my gloves on. It makes a difference for me

just pop them and go for another ride. eventually they will just turn calloused and you will have no more trouble.

i used to get blisters at the base of all of my fingers when i first started riding, a buddy told me to pop the blisters and keep riding... now the blisters have moved on and the callouses are here to stay

Yeap, I was going to say chop some wood, that will also build up some nice callouses too, pop them and move on.

I haven't had blister on my hand from riding in years! I doesn't really matter for me what type of gloves I wear I just don't really blister. Now I'm sure that it is different for other people so you need to find a pair of gloves that suit you right. I'd go to a local dealer and find a preferably leather palmed glove that fits your hands snug, but not tight. Again for me I can wear anything pretty much, I wear finger-less gloves from Walmart for woods riding because I think it gives me a better feel when they get wet. But for the track I like Fox Dirtpaw gloves because they are tough and pretty cheap. Hope this helps you a little.

EDIT:

Just my luck, right after posting about how I usually don't get blisters on my hands after riding I come home from football practice with 2 half-dollar sized blisters on my heels from cleats that are to small....

Hmm I have some pretty good calusing but I always take my left thumb "knuckle"?  The lower where it connects to my hand on the out side down till it bleeds. My glove has a big blood spot.  Only on my left hand and only moto not bmx park riding or downhill mtb racing or riding..

Come to think of it I only get blisters on the insides of my thumbs. I get minor ones on the inside of my palm like at the base of each finger. Now that I look at them, they are blisters for one second then callous over in just a little while. My gloves seem to fit nice and tight, they don't side around like my previous gloves. I traded with my Dad for a day and his hands are probably 2 sizes larger. His hands stretched out the gloves and caused me to get blisters. Could be the problem. I don't have giant hands either Size 9 Adult. I might try the medical tape or GoldBond.

I did notice I have seams at the base of the fingers. I thought that might be an issue. I believe the size is perfect. I just don't want to have someone hold the glove while I run into it hand in front to get them on . They are not so tight where I can't bend my fingers, but they are tight enough to not slide. And trust me if I could ride everyday all day I would. With work at random times on random days it's tough. Not to mention I don't enjoy going solo when riding. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY I am friends with has a bike. Well one, but it's a DS and he's afraid of getting his soles wet.

Get some grip donuts if you don't already have them.

Lavender oil works well on blisters too each night, few applications.
