So I live 8.5km's from work, and can get to work riding about 90% of the time offroad. Toying with the idea of getting a cheap 2nd hand enduro bike to use it for the commute, reckon it would be tons of fun. And then it's a fun bike to play with one weekends and perhaps, maybe, just for the heck of it do a one or two local enduro races. I know maintenance can be hectic, but even ons such a sort distance?
Good or bad idea?

Anyone got any suggestions on bikes? I can get KTM 250 sx's, YZ 250, CRF 250's, older WR450's, for pretty cheap in my area.

you can ride dirt bikes on the street there?   lucky you,  if I could it would be a gasgas 300 or a ktm 300 xc-w.   You really need a wide ratio tranny on the road,  that means you want a proper enduro not a MX bike unless you dont plan on riding over 50mph

MrBlahh said it best make sure you get a bike that is some what a dual sport bike. I enjoy my KTM 450 EXC on the road, and off.

No not allowed, however there is loads of open fields, and forrests around me, I can connect them all up and get to work with minimal riding on roads (crossing one here and there).

Would a KTM 250 exc be a better option? Had a look at the 300 - it's just just out of my price range.

A 250 would be good. I had a 200exc and it had plenty of power.
