From the fire to the frying pan trying my luck with motocross. Coming from an enduro back ground, after some bike set-up advice, I wanted to run my PhDs on my 350sxf but sitting doesn't really feel that natural of a position which i liked on the trail ( high bar position) I'm not that tall at 6" but love a high bar. So anyway does this effect different skills used on a mx track? Thanks guys! Al

Have fun but be careful!  Most guys go the other way around....mx to enduro... I guess do like all the other new guys.. go to the races. Watch how they ride. Scout what class you might work good to start in. Get some how to ride books and how to mx dvd's practice a bit ..try using different setups and see how many laps you can do and the speed etc.Check out all the TT stuff on this subject from the archives... blah blah blah. Hold your line when a faster guys comes around the track. Theyll figure out how to get around you. Don't try to move to let him by... Have fun!! I don't know though .. I like enduro and offroad races better. you don't race for 20 min in a moto then have to wait till the afternoon for your second moto to come around. You get more riding for your money in hare scrambles etc and you have less chances to break bones on big jumps etc... I don't know ... do it all and have fun!!

I'm going the same way too, from woods to a try at the track. I'm not really all that interested in racing (yet), just wanted to do it and have some fun with it.
As for the tall bar, it may be a problem if it's too tall. Even as a total newb at the track I can see that I'm over the front of the bike a lot more than in the woods. Different style involved in a jump at the track compared to jumping  log. There's also the more aggressive on the tank cornering that a really tall bar could make difficult. As Hawaiirider said, go to the track, see how the bikes are setup, and see how it compares with what your using. Ride a practice day (or 2, or 3, or 4) and see how your setup feels. You'll soon start seeing what you need to change to make it work.

No worries thanks guys, I'll still be doing enduros. I find mx challenging and like the fact of its kinda like learning to ride again and it's great for fitness. Not to sure about those jumps though haha.. Would be good if there was an option of a river crossing or mabe a log! Might be onto something here!!

I'll take your advice and have a look what the gurus are running at a race day. Feels comfy anyway and can't fault the set up on my bike yet.

PhD's? Tall bars are good for staying standing in an upright neutral position, something you should almost never do on an mx track. Avoid bar risers and any bars with significant sweep ie CR Hi. You want to be low and forward, but still comfortable. I like protaper windham/rm mid, other people will recommend the rental rc high, but i never found a need to go that high and i'm 6'4"

The stand up position used in the woods is completely different from the attack position used in motocross. Maybe pick up a second set of bars for MX and then swap em' out before you hit the MX track.

No problems i find this "attack" position that is totally different in mx compared to enduro interesting, so if your riding rutted out single trail, this is different to riding a rutted berm? Or braking bumps/accel bumps? I guess the list could go on.. I think i will put the renthals that came stock back on the bike and see how it goes.

Thanks guys

Have you ever tried endurocross?? Those tracks are pretty interesting, logs, rocks, water, etc...but it is in a tight setting. I was at glen Helen the other day and saw how those tracks we're setup, it looks tough. Might be more up your alley?
