TT500 wet sump problem

I finally got my TT running solid but started noticing that it would smoke really bad right at startup and after it warmed up it would be fine. Now I know that oil could get getting past the rings when it's cold, and after they expand a bit when they warm up it stops or maybe the valve seals need replacement, but i think that it is wet sumping. On my '70 BSA A65t, it would wet sump until I installed a little check valve, and would smoke like a locomotive until it pumped that oil out of the case and I think the TT is doing the same thing. The reason I think it is wetsumping, is becuase if I let the bike sit, no oil will show up on the dipstick, but if the bike runs the level will be right in the middle of the hatch marks on the dip. I just changed the oil and filter, and know that 2.1L of oil are in the bike and it isn't leaking any so I think that when she sits that oil is drainging into the case.

Do these bikes have a check valve anywhere? I looked through my Hanes manual and it doesn't list one.

If they do have one, can someone let me know where it is located and if there is a rebuild kit available? Should I replace my oil pump?

Thank you in advance!

It could be the small seal inside the clutch cover with the ball bearing in it,
I had the same prob  in my bike leaking oil from this worn seal and making it a wet sump motor over night etc .
worth a check you will have to remove the clutch cover to see the seal i am talking about its about the size of your little finger nail

It does have the valve you can't find and I don't recall where it is either.  It also has a scavenging oil pump that will pump all the oil in the crankcase  back to the oil tank.

The bike will wet sump if you don't warm it up for the first time of the day slowly.  Just short shift for 3-5 minutes then it will be fine for rest of the day or longer.  I took off quickly one time and sprayed me and my clothes with oil when it blew oil into the air box and then out the exhaust.  I won't do that again.

Hi tattham:

Same as your BSA, it's a common problem with XT/SR500's too.  I guess all dry-sump engines now and then.

I don't know why the oil check valve is included under contact breaker/governor on this page....but here it is.   It's parts 16,17,18.   It's a spring, a ball, and a seat located just to the left of the oil filter hole.  If you look at your right engine case there's a small round lumpon the case just to the left of the oil filter cover....that's where it is.  You have to remove the case but then it's just a few minutes to install.  I think a set it is about 15 bucks.

Usually when it happens to me I check the oil with the bike cold and discover low oil.  So I top it up and the bike starts blowing smoke because it's overfull.

The XT500 manual says to check the oil, start the bike, let it run a bit...and then check the oil.  I guess they do that for a reason.  I don't worry about mine anymore, sometimes it leaks, and sometimes it don't.  I'm just careful not to add oil until I've warmed it up and then checked the level.  If it has wet-sumped  I just wait a few minutes and the smoke goes away.  It's never harmed it in 30 years.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate all your help!

I think that I'm going to keep my eye on it for a little bit and if it keeps smoking and doesn't clear up after I warm the bike up I will have to go in and change these.

Tonight I have fork seals to finish!

Thanks again!

Ride on!
