Got an 83 XL 185 that runs great up to about mid RPMs. Starts first kick, but over half way up the RPM range the bike just boggs down. Carb is clean, new 93 gas. Runs like a champ down low. No smoke, I went on a 100 mile duel sport ride Saturday, no problems. Could I have a blown base gasket, and need rings. Any help would be great.

Many forums go a bit quiet this time of Year. People go riding when the Sun shines !
It does sound like a carb problem to me.
An ultrasonic clean is the best idea.
Other problems are possible, such as CDI breakdown or camshaft / valve issues, but these are somewhat more unusual.
What about fuel tank venting ?
Partially blocked fuel tap ?
Blocked or degraded air filter ?

Thank you guys, I knew someone would come thru. I have checked the air filter, have not replaced it, but plan to soon. Is's not to bad. I cleaned the carb. so that may be the prob. Need to let a pro do it. I HOPE thats all it needs. This old bike rides so GOOD, and I forgot how good those old HONDAS shift after riding a Gas Gas for 11 years!!!
Thanks again,
Darrell

I'm always amazed at how guys will go a whole season complaining that they can't get their carb figured out and having all kinds of problems, when an hour with someone that knows what they are doing will usually result in "end of problem". Check your local Craigslist for guys advertising repair work. You certainly can't trust everyone, but you can usually pick out guys that 'sound' legit. I found a guy that builds and races drag bikes (garage full of trophys) that rejetted and adjusted the valves on my 650L (for $25hr). The bike absolutely PURRS, not just runs great, but sounds so nice it's amazing. Lots of "ex Honda wrenches" out there, retired or moved on to something different.
INCREDIBLY valuable asset to find.
