Recently aquired a 2006 250f at an auction and noticed a good amount of oil had accumilated on the frame and engine case. Upon further inspection its actually coming from the oil gauge window. Has anybody had this problem before and if so how did you fix it. I purchased a new gauge window which will arive in a few days, but I cant for the life of me figure out how the old one comes out. Any input will help thanks.

You have to take the engine apart to access the other side of the oil window. There is a retainer holding it in there if i remember correctly. Once that is removed just press it out with a socket of the same size in a vice.

So in other words the case has to be split? Whats the point of the small tab that looks like its holding in the window?

Small update.... After waiting a good amount of time for the replacement part to arrive, the case was split and the window was pressed out from the inside. There was actually no retainer holding it on from the inside. It only pressed in from the outside. So coulda taken it out without splitting the case. Good thing I did though because I found a bunch of plastic from what use to be a cam chain guide inside, along with a small peice of the cam chain. Obviously the cam chain exploded at some point in this bikes life(hense the new crank). Still amazes me how someone can tare open a bike to replace a crank and not clean the debris out

i wonder what would be the best way to remove it without splitting the cases? maybe drilling a hole in the window and putting a screw extractor in and wiggling it out?

Thats exactly what I would do if I were to do it again. Maybe a 1/8 hold in the middle of the glass and a small hook pick and a pull should come right out.
