Just wondering, if I find a clean already plated 650r should I expect any problems when I go to our wonderful DMV to transfer it into my name? I've bought umpteen streetbikes but never a plated dirtbike. Do they have to inspect it or anything and once I do transfer it into my name do I simply pay for new tags each year or have to jump through hoops each time reg. expires? Thanks.
Plated 650's in CA.

yea if it has already been plated in the past thats it they really cant F with you too much. Its kinda a grandfather clause. I reg. my 600r that one of the previous owner had plated over 10 years ago. and by the time o bought the bike all it had was a working head light and thats it. I went to the dmv to get it put in my name and get a greet sticker. and the lady behind the counter said well its regestered as a dual sport so if you want to spend the 14$ or whatever it was to buy the plate they would give me one no issue no inspection no nothing. I did have to pay the back reg. fees witch wasnt cheap but ounce its plated its always plated kinda thing,

I lived in Woodland Hills California for 3 years, if you can buy a Plated XR650R DO IT NOW! as they are no longer registering them as road legal, hell, buy it even if it has no blown engine, all you need is the crank case LHS with engine numbet to add to another engine, and then buy an engine, i woulda even bought just a frame with paperwork and plate then bought a green stickered one and transferred everything over, they are getting rare,,,,,,,,,,dont hang about if you see one for sale, but be warned they hold their price as its the Holy Grail of street legal dualsport if you can get one in CA

I bought a used ca plated xrr 2 years ago.I tried to do the transfer at AAA( I am a member) and they couldnt do it.Took the paperwork to local dmv and got it transferred and tagged no problem. From what i have heard the plates had to be issued before jan 31 2004.Except for no magic button the bike is very capable.I run 15/47 or 14/47 gearing and freeway running is no problem.
