Got a flat yesterday at Tahuya.  Not a clue how long I had been riding on it.  With that and a chunked up front, i was all over the marble trails.  Took the rear tire off and spent over an hour trying to break the bead.  Stupid ass 19 wheel, hate them!   Finally had to cut a 2x4 down and make myself a little bead popper...LOL.

Found the hole in the tube.  Along with some really strange wear marks on it.  Cleaning everything up and noticed the inside of my tire is SHREDDED.


Maybe I need to put on a second rim-lock?  Never had this happen before.  You can see where it's ripped to hell.  The other side is marked up a little but not nearly as bad.  I don't know.  Any way you look at it I'm really pissed and irritated.  Need to look at my bank account, but I don't think I can afford 2 new tires and a tube right now...and another rim lock.

*One thing i did notice is a lot of goop and wetness in the tire.  I scrapped out a tbs. in just one pass.  I guess I get a lot of muddy water in there from riding Walker Valley.  Does this happen to everyone else too and do you think that caused the rear to spin a little?  The shedding doesn't go all the way around, less than 2feet I would guess.

That sucks Kevin. When did you realize it was flat? I don't remember you mentioning it.

Haha.  I didn't see it until we were unloading that night.  Was having too fun of a time to notice a small detail like that!

At one of the breaks I saw your tire looked low but figured you were running Walker pressure same as me so I didn't think much of it. I know those marbles sure messed with my head, thought I had a flat several times.

I suspect the interior shredding is from running with a flat for a long period of time.  I've got a couple of spare 19" rears with 50% tread left if you want them, freebies, no charge

Damn Kevin, Your rough on your scoots... You dont need 2 rim locks, just makes it a pain to change tires. Did it rip off the valve stem? I doubt it if your bead was stuck like that.

ya get that when ya run really low air pressure. The tire rubs itself raw.

the shredding is from the rim grinding on it while it was flat or extremely low psi. I like to run duct tape over the nipples and ditch the rubber band. makes a better seal IMHO.

I was thinking it was the tire shredding that caused the hole in the tube.  Had the psi at 11 which isn't extremely low.

*makes more sense the way you guys describe it though.  Guess i'm just surprised the bead was still seated.

Willy---I'll figure something out and let you know.  As soon as I can find the time to get into my bank...I'll probably be able to order a tube and rear and just keep riding on the front for awhile.  We don't need traction on the front for jumping roots at walker, right?

Some of the newer tires that focus on light weight have very thin inner linings that can shred even when run with normal pressures.  The tire that I used at the Desert 100 last year went flat a couple rides later.  Even tho the knobs were not that worn, the inside was so tore up that I could stick several fingers under the exposed tire cords. I could see where the cords had chaffed the tube and caused it to go flat. I always run at least 14 lbs pressure, so that was not the issue.  I got a replacement, and a couple months later I had the same thing happen.  I moved to a more heavily constructed tire and the problem went away.

I knew someone would ask that!  It was the Bridgestone M404 that I had problems with. This is a fine performing tire and I know that a lot of really fast riders like it a lot.  I just never got along with it.  Maybe it had something to do with my considerable girth...

I can say, however, that at least a couple people working in the industry told me inner tire wear was a "known problem" with this particular tire - and other light weight MX tires built in a similar fashion.

Very interesting Grey.  I really just wanted to get the same tire because it handled so well.  Would REALLY suck if the same thing happened again.  I would say I was only 1/4 into the life of the tread.

My feet are about as tore up as your tire. After 2 days at work, I can barely walk   However, I wouldn't trade the fun for anything. Lots of ice...Has been my friend.   Luckily the pegs don't touch either one of my big toes. I'll be back at it by the weekend. Maybe a trip north...
