06 cam chain install

so i am installing a new cam chain on my 06 yz450f becasue i replaced the valves and since i had it off i wouldnt hurt do this. when i took the old one off it was super tight even with the tensioner off. When i go to put the new one on i cant get on becasue it too is super tight. If i take the chain guide off ( the side the tensioner pushes on ) it goes on just fine with plenty of slack for tensioner to work. so i was wondering if the guides really go bad or is it something different that i cant see.

I have always taken the cams off to install the cam chain, otherwise there is not enough slack.
