2004 xr650l. 3500+ ft. New rider. 52/160 Dynojet kit. Uni filter. De-smoged. Snorkel removed. 2.5 turns out.

At low throttle all is well. As soon as I ask for more it bogs out and makes a terrible thump thump thump. Some surging. I replicated my pals mods and his performs stellar. Only diff is he has big pipes and fmf can and 55/165.

I pulled the spark plug. Black as night. So I figure too rich. I tried the mix screw and the screw wanted to fall out before it started to run shitty. So back to stock jetting 152/50 I go. Still faltering mid throttle. So now all I've done is Dynojet spring/needle and uni filter but the issue persists. Help please.

I I took out the Dynojet kit entirely and reverted to Dave's mods only. No upping jet size. Runs much better but still almost chugs at times with full throttle.

Crannie I'm having the same problems with my 09 kalif model.  I've removed the smog stuff, done dave's mod and now I'm having jetting issues. They are similar to what was going on with your bike. My bike has 90 miles on it, probably not even broken in yet.
My exhaust is stock. I'm thinking that with the larger jets there is more fuel available, but with the exhaust still being corked up , the carb isn't increasing the air flow in to the mixture. So it's creating a rich situation.  Mine is so bad that when I get on the throttle hard, it sputters then dies. Same happens when at a moderate rpm then back off the throttle.
Tomorrow I'm going back to stock jetting and adjust from there. I hope this works.
Any input from someone more knowledgable than me???????

You can't de-restrict the intake without also doing the 'out-take'.
All you did was richen the mixture by increasing the jet size, so it's running very rich on the main.
You HAVE to de-restrict the exhaust if you want it to run correctly.

I've been thinking about this all nite. You're right Krannie. Until I have a different exhaust I'm gonna run the stock jetting....

I went back to stock jetting and am still having the listed symptoms, combined with some popping. I'm perplexed. I can't figure out whats going on?  It seems to run ok for a few minutes, then stumbles and dies. It will restart then dies over and over.
Is it possible there is an engine problem?  It seems to me its a fuel supply issue?
