I have been looking for a rancher 4x4 (foot shift power steering model) for sale, but a part of me thinks the trx700xx may be a better choice for trail riding and steep incline mountain roads? which of these atv's would excel at this type of riding? I will not be using this for work (maybe throw a rifle rack on it), merely trail riding in the Ozark mountains and creek beds. the trails can get pretty rough and rocky.

Two wheels are more capable than four.

I have 2 wheels. I'm more interested in a quad for this circumstance. I can put a rack on the back of the trx700 for carrying fishing gear and some hiking gear. Would the 700xx be better suited for rough inclined rocky trails vs. A rancher 4x4?

trx700xx looks extremely capable for being a 2wd race quad...

I love Honda's bike but im not a huge fan of their 4 wheelers, the absolute best of both worlds would be the Can-am Rengade 500 or 800.

Ya the can am 800 renegade is pretty sick, but 3500-4000 for the trx700xx vs 9000-10000 for a used renegade...

I have a TRX400EX and ride very steep hills in CO. I used to have a Rincon 650 which could do a little more since it had 4 wheel drive. I would not trade my 400 for anything. It is lighter and more fun. Just don't run stock tires

So would a 400ex be better suited for trails? I am 5'11" and 260lbs so not exactly a little guy.

Also I figured with fuel injection, IRS, and greater power, the 700xx would be a better trail rig?

The 700 will likely have more ground clearance so if you rid rocky trails or ruts it may be better in that respect. The 400ex is just a lot lighter so I can get it to go more places. Fuel Injection would be nice but the carb on the 400 was real easy to dial in. The other thing I like for exploring is that the 400ex has reverse. A lot of the old mining roads here in CO dead end on a cliff and it's nice to have. I do not know if the 700 has that or not. We are the same size by the way. I never notice the lack of IRS on the 400 because it is a smaller atv. I would have hated the Rincon 650 without it.

A used Renegade is not 9-10 thousand, a new one is...A used Renegade goes for 6 thousand or a little higher

I admit I do like the simplicity of the 400ex. I will be up in the mountains and remote locations so being able to fix something should it break may be an issue...

ok those pics showed up. I dont forsee using this quad for mud like that, as I have a 4x4 foreman I can use in that kind of riding. this is more for fast paced trail riding.

i had a 2003 warrior i just got rid of, but i rode that thing threw everything and on all trails. mud bogs the renagade guys wouldnt do, hill climbs 450's were afraid of. but when i rode my friends outlaw, it felt weird. the IRS makes you sit very high and body rolls like a car on turns so it feels like riding on a bubble to me. a skid plate on the 400ex is fine for anything that other quads are running on. the 400ex is much much cheaper, meaning you can mod it to make it how you want, they are much less tempermental for stuff like gas quality and oil change time. if worst comes to worst you can almost take the whole quad apart on the trail with a few wrenchs. the 400ex is for sure the best choice for a cheap trail ready machine. but if you have money to throw at the quad and a mechanic to fix the complicated EFI and IRS components, then i would for sure get the xx.

The motor of the TRX700 is based off the XR650R, which is completely indestructible. ('Course the TRX400 has the XR400 motor in it.... Also indestructible..) Can't go wrong with something that has an indestructible motor. I'm sure you know about the ground clearance and all that.. IMO it would be a good quad to get. I think a friend of mine has one, will see if i can't ride it so I can tell you how 'good' or 'bad' it is.

I would definitely get the 700xx for the type of riding you are doing. I am a quad rider as much as I am a bike rider. My garage is nothing but red so I have a pretty good grasp on what each of hondas machines are like. The independent rear will be very nice as well as the fuel injection for elevation changes in the mountains. The gun rack and fishing equipment would be easier to carry on a utility quad but the 700 should have enough room to do it. Also sounds like you are a big guy and I think you would appreciate the power of the 700 over a 400ex.
