my 2008 250 is a hunk of shit. I have had nothing but problems. Everything except the valves!!!!! It now takes me 30 min just to start the bike, another 10 min when I stall (rarely) or stop. I have only done 40 easy hours (no track riding, just trails) on it since I did a full rebuild. before the rebuild it lasted more then 100 hours. Now its just a hunk of shit. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong with it.

My first guess would be either valves or jetting, has the temperature changed around the same time the bike became hard to start ? Did the bike sit for a while with fuel left in the carb ? Have you checked the valve clearances ?

Valves are what I am thinking. That or the cam chain, it seems to backfire when I try to start it. It also seems to minimal/no compression. I ride my bike nearly every afternoon (its good having a track a 5 min ride away). I haven't changed the jetting since I got it second hand and there has been no problems with it. I haven't left the bike sitting for more then 2 days with fuel in the carby and I have never seem to have a problem with it. I have asked other people about it and the think the timing chain slipped a tooth.

Hmmmm... you say your bike is a hunk of
, although you haven't checked the valves in 40 hours and have never checked/changed the jetting. I'm thinking operator error.

The nut connecting the handlebars to the footpegs is the problem.

I checked the valves 15 hours ago. Bike runs fine all year round with current jetting. found the problem, was a flat tire
It was actually the bike sucking dirt from a recent tail ride, was real dusty. The air filter was oiled properly !!

Check the valves!! Had a similar problem with my 07 as far as starting and running bad. Turned out my right intake valve was bad. I know you checked them 15 hours ago, but they can go out of spec really fast. Got the new valves in and its amazing now starts awesome and runs great.

Sounds like operator error.....
Just because you only ride trails doesn't mean anything...in fact I am leary of buying "trail ridden only" bikes because the owners usually skimp on maintanence. Pull the valve cover and check your valve clearances. Sounds like tight valves to me...my brothers 250f was the same way...cus he didnt keep up on his maintanence.
pull your valve cover....check the clearances...if in spec than pull the carb and take out the pilot jet and blow it out...clean the carb and put a fresh filter on it and give it another go. How long does it sit in between rides? How long do you go between oil changes etc....and what parts did you replace when it "made it over 100hrs" before.
AND BTW how the F does a flat tire make it hard starting? &%$#@! your joking right? and if it "sucked dirt" get ready for some bigger problems than not oiling your airfilter right.
Where I live is some of the dustiest riding you will ever be in...and none of us have problems with bikes sucking dirt..........................

My maintenance is right up there. after the 100 hours a replaced all main bearings and con rod and piston and rings. the valves were adjusted as well.. when i first got the bike my maintenance was poor. with only like 4 oil changes in the hundred hours and only like 10 air filter changes. it ran perfect every single time and i left fuel in the carby for months at a time. I am going to buy a new fuel injected bike. Thanks for the Input and your guys were right. somehow dirt got into the bore and valves.
