Noticed quite a bit of discussion regarding aftermarket tanks lately, so I'm throwing this out. What's your opinion for an aftermaket tank for the 'L', and what size is best? IMS, Acerbis, Clarke? 4.0, 4.3 or...? The stock tin can and "wings" aren't cuttin' it. It's time for a (much needed) upgrade. My 98 has white plastic.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 01 L, bought the Clarke 4.7 in red, I like the tank very much and the extra range it offers is great, I have yet to run it into reserve. The tank looks good and looks like it was original equipment on the bike except for graphics. It did not come with a vent hose, had to add one myself. They offer the tank in red and white and another color I think. Mine's been on for a year now, no problems. You don't have to worry so much about little dings in the plastic tank like the metal one. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the info.

I'm considering in the Clarke. But I checked out the Clarke website linked from Dirtrodders.com and saw the two tanks available for the L, the 4.0 and the 4.7, and wasn't sure about the style of the larger size.

If you have a chance, take a look at the picture of the 4.7 on Clarke's site. It doesn't look at all like the tank on the heavily modified XR650L shown in Dirtrodders. Is this the same "Baja" tank (nice on Dirtrodders) as the 4.7 (strange) on the Clarke web site? :)

Also, any inteference issues with the forks, bars or blinkers? :D

When I bought my tank, I don't remember the 4 gal. tank being available.; A couple of reasons I went with the Clarke, was a friend of mine has a Clarke on his bike and has had it for years, also reading a magazine article someone said on another manufactures tank they had a clearance problem as the signals would contact the tank when turned lock to lock, they had to re position the signals, I didn't have to do that with the Clarke, there are indents molded into the tank for clearance for them. Will try and send you a few pictures of my tank mounted via a PM if I can, or send me your e mail via PM and I send you the pictures.

I have a IMS (red -4.0 gal).It fits pretty good. The thing i like about the IMS tanks is that they are narrow. They dont get in the way went riding. My freind has an Acerbis(5 gallon) and it's HUGE!Ive never seen a Clark tank in person so i cant comment on those.my .02 worth :)
