clutch starter gear

ok I have the starter gear figured out but I have a question on the primary drive gear. it has some odd wear on it should I be concerned or just run it as it is 2009 ttr 125le  http://i1100.photobu..._b/DSCN1932.jpg http://i1100.photobu..._b/DSCN1933.jpg

If it were me, I'd want to figure out what caused it to make sure it doesn't happen again or get worse.  Often times, gears are just case-hardened, rather than through-hardened, and once the surface is compromised, they can wear in a hurry.  That being said, it doesn't look like the surface that bears the load has been damaged, but I would replace the gear to be safe (I'll admit that I'm picky, though).  Don't just slap a new one in there.  Try to figure out the cause so you don't ruin a new gear.
