I may be wrong about this but there is a class for the unlimited 2 stroke........the Monster Energy Cup.  The possibility of a million dollar payday wasn't enough to coax a single 500 smoker to take the line.  I'm not here to bash the 2 stroke as I just love the sweet noises & smell they produce but I've got to think that if it was a superior machine then somebody would have stepped up to the line for a shot at the million bucks.

Maybe because their isnt a big bore 2 stroke available that doesnt have a 20 year old engine design, and its not worth developing if their is only one race you can use it in a year....Id love to see one there but not for a second did i think someone was gonna jump on a service honda 500 with its 20 year old motor design and try to race it. By bringing it back I think people mean develop a  modern big bore, its not like some guy can go "hey i wanna race one at the monster engine cup" and develop it from scratch on his own.

But but but but but I thought the 500 was the best engine ever built?

Nah..... They were back in "the day" according to those who ride/rode them. They don't compare to todays modern motor. They are however, IMO, still one of the best ass puckering adrenaline rides when it comes to speed and pure hit when the throttle is opened.

as far as having an open class, that has come and gone in pro racing but you can still do it at the "local" level just for fun (250 2T and above & 450 4T and above). It was a cool idea but only works in Motocross and off road enduro. 500 2T's have too much power for a SX track but when you gear them right, they are a hoot off road.... Nowadays, the 300 2T is the way to go but I still love my 500.

Hey Thanks!!! It does look cool. I still plan on putting an eric gorr 265cc top end for my cr. I was even toying with the thought of putting a gasgas 300 in a 3rd gen cr frame or maybe even my 01 fram. The six speed and awesome broad powerband with good on top is ia great motor.  .....just daydreaming and figuring, scheming in fun dirtbike fashion.... but then I think I could just buy a ktm 300 or husaberg 2t 300 and avoid the hassle. It's almost a waste anyway since my 01 is pretty maxed out in mods for what I do and I'm not scratching the surface for using it's potential. It's better to work on my fitness etc.. As far as the open class goes.. I know it's not the best for mx but I dig the class. I had so much fun racing my 430xc husky then and I raced it in everything ... from the Mauna Kea 200 to friday night flat track and TT to Motocross , hare scrambles and hawaiian style hare n hounds. I loved that bike even when the brakes disappeared some of the time .. I just ended up learning how to ride without brakes . That rush of speed and power and handling was worth it. That rap of the throttle gave me happy scary chills up my spine...and the bike never broke.. Never!!!! The only problem I had was with the drum brakes so I at least had the front brake relaced to a yamaha 465 twin cam brake that at least gave me some front brakes when things got wet. .front brakes are more important anyway....  When I used to watch the fastest riders ride open expert with speed that was a wonder to watch  . .because an open 2 stroke is an animal . You can tell I still miss it.

Don't know how much MX you do but the 250 w/300 kit is the weapon of choice for MX and ST/Enduro for many of us.

Yea I've been reading some on that... mx action and others have been writing on it. I'm not racing MX anymore but always like to keep the option open. I mainly ride technical stuff and harder trail with some hare scramble now...but you never know ..I like the 18" rear tire so if I go the KTM route I think I might head toward a ktm 300xc. .. The sx 250 to 300 is lighter though... I don't know. I love my cr. I have it set up very well for trail as it is and it works very well...but I also have the setups ready just in case..You can see what I mostly ride from the Beta link I left. I usually go in much tighter enduro stuff. ..not as much what MX riders care for as much but I grew up with both.

I personally never said the 500 was the best motor ever built. Personally I think a modern 300 2 stroke is the best motor ever built. I have a GasGas300 and it is by far the best motor I've ever ridden. KTM's 300's are a bit flat feeling but can be adjusted to my liking as well. Honestly I think 300 2 strokes would be very competitive with 450 4 strokes. They have such a broader powerband compared to a 250, so much easier to make hook up not to mention they have a bit more horsepower everywhere on the curve...especially the low to midrange.

The Gas Gas 250 motor is amazing, and in my limited time on the 300, it's just has so much pull I'm constantly blown away. Great engine.

And just when I thought the pro racing forum could hold no more trolls or dumb threads, along comes the 2t vs 4t argument!

Speaking of 2 stroke open classes, just a little FYI for those near the Hangtown National track. On Thursday May 17th (two days before the National opening round at Hangtown) there will be a open 2 strok class for the amateurs. As I mentioned above, this idea is still alive and kicking at the local level amateur events. The race will consist of any 2 stroke 125cc and above.
