What's a better truck for the buck? 01-06 cummins or a 01-06 duramax?

Oh whatever I get I will put probably a 90hp programmer but I'm not to big on the strokes I love the interiors of them like alot but I've never been a big ford fan and all the ones I actually like are way to much. And I haven't really heard any problems from them cause I don't know that many people that had them and the ones that did had the 05 and up and they were constantly havin them in the shop for transmissions or something and idk why? They didn't really pull that heavy of loads I think the heaviest load I seen them pull was like maybe 8000lbs and that's including the trailer. So seein their truck screw up all the time made me really not like ford oh and they said they get horrible mileage and they have a mild programmer that's like 90hp or less. But if I could find a pretty nice one that I knew wasnt ragged out im sure I could give it a chance too
That's why I said a 98-03 7.3 Super Duty. The 2003.5 and later 6.0L PSDs had a lot of issues and are pretty much junk. Programmers made the 6.0 issues a lot worse too. The 98-03 7.3 PSD engines were used in everything from school-buses to dump-trucks and are fine motors.

I will admit that the old 7.3s were great motors and that was the only ford motor ive ever liked but the question is bout that truck where would I find a truck of that year model and still be a good lookin truck?... Most people I've seen used thos trucks for farm work or just as work trucks. A friend of mine has a 96 ford with the old 7.3 and it's lifted on 36s but it's beat to hell cause they used it as a ranch truck but I love that truck (being as it the slowest truck around) but If I could find a ext cab or a 4 door 4x4 then I think I could give a ford a try.

I have an 05 Dodge w/ Cummins /auto transmission w/ 200k on it. I get an average of 19.4mpg empty/ 15mpg towing (never less).  I love the truck & hate the transmission which I just had to have rebuilt.  If you buy the Dodge get it from 2004.5 up(higher hp motor) w/ the manual (6 speed) transmission.  My cousin has the 03 Chevy w/ 5 speed auto (Duramax)  I've driven it on long trips towing and it tows better than my truck.  Not more power, just better power to the wheels w/ that Allison transmission.  If my truck were a standard transmission I'd call it a toss up.  Check the way the trucks ride-Dodge sits way higher and rides like a truck.  Chevy sits lower(look at the frame) and rides really smooth like a car.  I consider my truck far more off-road worthy, but it is like driving a school bus in town. FYI the trucks share and injection system that is made by bosch, just different injectors.  IMHO service work on the Dodge is way easier to access. Go to Turbo Diesel Register on the internet for Dodge info.

Sounds to me like you're the one who's been brainwashed... I never said anything bad about IH 466 engines, quite a few of them in medium duty service trucks with over a million miles on them so they must be good. But they don't come in pick up trucks and even if they did, 190hp probably isn't enough...

I will look and see but I might just keep my truck even tho it is a older gas motor and its a small motor but I've thought bout puttin a procharger on it with a 3.90 rear end with a locker. Since that would be alot cheaper then buyin another truck.

They were in the shop (05+) because the 6.0 in stock form is an unreliable, poorly designed piece of junk.

I could tell! I ain't got anything against ford but they haven't done to go with their motors besides the 7.3 and it was a big turd

Neither has GM or Dodge, but then again, neither of them build their own diesel engines. :banghead:

Ok ok you got me but they have all done better the last couple of years but Chevy is the only one that kept a motor ford has changed 4 times and dodge twice so that shows something for chevy

GM lucked out picking a better vendor?

Dodge had to change for emissions-the 5.9L Cummins couldn't have been made to pass emissions.

The 5.9 and 6.7 Cummins is the same engine. Just a different bore/stroke or combo of them is all plus mandated emissions, just like the DEF GM and Ford used.

Yeah and they did all of that bull and now they get worst mileage.

40% commonality between the two.

That wasn't for fuel mileage, but to comply with tailpipe emissions.

Yeah their not same exact engine but close and I think that's retarded that they did that not is loud screws up mileage and it cost more money if you just want to put a exuast. That is what's turnin away from the new diesels. I love the power and transmissions but they get the gas mileage of my old truck and I don't like that nor think that's a good deal to pay 50k for a truck that gets 15mpg naw that's bull!

They are making the half tons truck cars and everything else get better mpg but make diesels worst I'm sure they could of done something better.

Trust me, if they could get better mileage out of emissions compliant engines, they would.

We've been struggling in the big trucks just to get back up to pre-emmissions levels of fuel economy, and the mfgr's have been banging their heads against the wall to bring that number up too.

I'm sure they will come up with something to help... And who is makin that 8sp in the new dodges?? Or is it the same people that made the 5&6sp? That sounds like a huge money pit there. I thought the 5 & 6 speeds cost enough to rebuild/buy and now 8sp.... I would love to see how these transmissions will hold up compare to the older ones?? And I'm sure soon Allison will put a 8sp in the Chevys and make thos transmissions in the dodges look bad lol

ZF makes them, the same out fit that made the 5-speeds in the F-250 and 350 series in the 90's.  They've got a good track record for their trannies, but the problem becomes when they break, we used to have a hell of a time getting parts.

I was just readin up on the ZF and the 8sp can only hold up to 515 pounds-foot of torque but the 6.7 puts out 650?? I don't see how this is gonna work? The 545RFE is goin in the Dakota, The full size ram with the hemi has the 68RFE and the 6.7 has the ZF8sp. I've heard/read good things with the other transmissons but not with the ZF8sp and how it's gonna work with the 6.7.

the 8 speed is only going into the half tons with the 3.6 pentastar motor and later in the year the 5.7 hemi. there is no plan in the near future to put the 8 speed into a cummins as it cannot handle the torque. Also the 11.5 and up 6.7 auto's put out 800 ftlbs of torque. The 2013 cummins is supposed to get DEF and increase mileage considerably.

Manufacters didn't decide to put emission crap onto there diesels because they wanted to, it's because some epa tree hugging hippy decided that diesels are causing harm to there cats. If dodge/cummins didn't have to put dpfs and egr systems onto there trucks theny they wouldn't.
