I have had a 2006 crf250r for a couple months now and it has an irregular ticking noise. At first I was told it is probably normal but the more I ride I don't think it is. When I start it with the choke there is no ticking noise but as soon as I push the choke back in it begins to tick off and on. If I rev the engine up the ticking goes away. Sometimes once it is warm and idling there is no ticking noise, while other times it has the irregular ticking. It has kibble white valves and they were just checked and adjusted recently. The bike has ran great and I haven't had any other issues with it. One of my friends believes it is the timing chain slapping. Any ideas what to check? Thanks

Here is a video of the noise. It begins at 6 seconds and you can hear it off and on throughout the video.

I think its the timing chain, but i'm not certain.

Also check your carb and idle circuit, sounds like your bike idles irractically and wants to die? Or it could just be cold with the choke off. My bike does the same thing when its cold and wants to die. I never thought much of it though

Pull the tensioner seen if it is still tight I have had 2 fail. Also the plastic part o the tensioner that rides on the chain can wear through too. That does not sound like the normal decompressor clanking. Not a noise I have heard before and I have heard lots of fould noises.

I checked the timing chain and it appeared to be tight. I am going to look closer tomorrow at the plastic slide. Your talking about the white one directly in front of the chain correct? What is the normal depth of wear into that slide? Thanks

I ordered a manual cam chain tensioner and installed it. The noise did not go away so I put the auto one back on. I am really stumped with this issue. Anybody have any other ideas?

Does the bike make this noise at all when it is warmed up?

Yes, sometimes it makes the noise when its hot and the rpms are low. Other times it isn't there. Bike has been running good I have just kept running it after I checked the timing chain and valves again.
