Try tightening the adjustment a little . If that doesn't do it , you could pull the clutch and insure there's nothing built up on the plates . Some fine emery cloth and a light touch to both the fiber and steel plates should freshen it .

The 'pointer' on the actuator arm for the push rod has to be lined up with the alignment mark on the case . It looks like a raised dash mark next to the actuator arm , toward the inside of the motor .

The jumping shouldn't hurt unless you don't have control of the bike at the time .

How can that be ? Maybe doing something wrong or the cable is junk ??
Try it again : Loosen the adjuster on the motor . SCREW the lever adjuster in all the way . Using the adjuster at the motor , align the pointer with the mark and tight that adjuster . There should be little to no play at the lever .

I have an old Honda that has a similar quirk . I've tried everything and have learned to live with it .
Maybe it's one of those things , like your bike having only two wheels , that you simply have to accept or spend time chasing tails .
It is just a machine and an old one at that .
