i recently picked up a 06 yz250, the clutch lever had alot of play in it, i thought it was the cable so i orderd a new thinking it was stretched, side by side new and old are the same length, i have the cable adjusted all the way out and still lots of slack. Now the bike came with asv levers, could the clutch perch be from another bike not designed for the yz and this is why its giving me problems ?

I think so.  Most aftermarket perch's use Hond aleverage ratios and cable pull specs. These dotn match Yamaha well at all.

you think the clutch could be hung up if the basket is notched and not letting it return all the way out? i'll look in the morning to see if the clutch basket is notch.

A basket woudl need to be seriously notched to do this. Probably unrideable if it were that bad.

alrighty thank you , by any chance can anyone take a pic of their clutch lever (yz250) behind the flywheel cover so i can see the position of it to see if it looks like mine

Its a 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock position depending from which side you look at it. Points straight at you when sitting in front of it.

There should be 2 places to adjust the cable. One at the perch and one on the cable. I have seen a lot of people overlook the one on the cable before

Maybe I can tack a question I had on here as well.  My 05 yz125 came with asv clutch/perch installed and oem spare.  I wanted to try the oem as the asv doesn't seem to have good modulation to it.  I can feed slack in or out on the clutch but the 0-100% engagement on the clutch is a very small portion of the lever stroke.

So, I put the oem on and it seems the clutch cable isn't long enough.  I have the adjustor on the perch and on the cable turned in all the way to get as much slack as possible.  I can only manage a little over 1/8" of free play at the clutch.  This is giving an even smaller window of modulation than the asv because disengagement is right at the start of the lever pull allowing no modulation.  This is a brand new oem clutch cable so it seems strage.  I checked the old one I pulled out and it's the same length.

If the bike has had aftermarket plates added, all bets are off.  Some of these are thinner, or thicker, and th ematerial is not as good as oem. If your chasing clutch problems get the oem plates first. It will save a lot of issues later.

i believe the clutch is stock, look at basket thru the oil fill today it has little notches nothing big, but got the cable all extended out and the perch and it just enough slack so im pretty sure its the pos perch, what do you guys suggest for another brand perch thats compatible with the yz ?

You should look into this first. Did you use the adjuster on the cable also? I use the stock perch from the newer YZ's because I think there just as good as any aftermarket perch at half the cost.

I just bought an 09 YZ250 and I'm replacing the clutch perch to get an easier smoother pull, I've been spoiled by a hydraulic clutch. I got the Streamline perch and lever assembly from Rocky Mountain and I'm actually returning it after one ride with it. The perch is great, very good build quality, good fit, nice ball bearings, smooth pull...but the lever shape is horrible. There is no radius contour to the lever, its very flat where your fingers wrap around lever giving it an uncomfortable and bulky feel, it puts preassure points on your fingers that tire your hands quickly. I'm returning it for a Pro-Taper (elite?) ball bearing perch, it doesn't have a folding lever but I have wrap around handguards so I don't really need one.

If you liked the hydro why not just buy one?  The magura or streamline rebrand are $100 more but at least you know you WILL like and be happy with it.

So I got the Pro Taper Profile clutch perch in and any improvent over the stock pull is marginal, there really is no replacement for a hydro clutch. I'm not going to send it back, I'll ride with it a couple times and I'll probably just get used to the heavier pull than my Husaberg that I had.
