I'll be the 3rd vote for the CR500.

I've owned several, IMO they are the best all-around two stroke Honda made.
No power valve, no TPS carb, plenty of power on tap, super reliable & versatile.

My 2004 CRF250R / 1997 CR500R home made conversion:

My 1997 CR500R:

The only down side that I see to a CR500 is the fuel range, being two times the size of a 250.
The oversized tanks can look pretty ridiculous too.

Tell me why I am wrong?

I'm more concerned with the peg to seat to bars triangulation rather than how narrow or wide a single cylinder dirt bike is.

that's a big part of why I like my '07 more than my '95. The '07 has a more modern geometry that uses steeper rake with a longer wheelbase. This stretches out the bars further from the center of the bike and opens up the rider cockpit. I'm tall so the '07 feels much more comfortable.

That is good to hear, because I'm 6'3" and have considered picking up a 3rd gen too ... I actually think the 00-01 is set up for a shorter rider ... which is why I had to buy a taller seat for it. Might even cut the spacer off the pegs and move it to the top ... should give me another 1/2" up and 1/2" back. Closer to the ground, but I don't ride anywhere that has mammoth ruts.

Too narrow on the saddle and it is harder to hold the bike with your knees without juicing your peach-meat.

( This cracked me up.  Too funny. )

I gotta say, the CR500 does have a great seat, but my 2000 CR500 vibrated way more than my `05 CR250R does.
My 3rd gen alloy CR feels more ergonomic for my size than my CR500 did.  I love both bikes, and they are both different.
The CR500 is king of the sand dunes.  I felt like Superman on that bike.  My CR250 is great fun at the dunes, but I miss the
extra power of the 500 out there.
I don't race motocross tracks, so my viewpoint / experience is limited.

The IMS or Clarke 3.6gal aftermarket tank on the steel framed CR500 isn't that much wider then its OEM tank. On my aluminum frame 500, I used the CRF250X tank for the added distance factor. With the 2.4gal X tank, I managed to squeek out 73 miles in a day of hard riding. That meets my needs as I'm just an average joe who gets tired...LOL

Fuel capicity is a huge factor to me. I found the aluminum frame bikes to be limited by design, due to the twin spars. Thats one of the many reasons for why I plan to use a newer KTM chassis on my next 500 conversion.

'93 CR250. Best chassis that ever graced a CR, with the sweetest engine Honda ever made. Later CR250s made more peak power, but none since have been the uber-flexible "power from idle all the way to an unlimited screaming top" engine that the '93 had. That bike was a fork away from true greatness.
i have to agree i found one for 500$ for my friend, best bike he ever had damn thing tryed to throw everyone off the back it just felt like it was electric because of how linear the power was too
