Fitting polisport MMX headlight on 2011 YZ450F - ECU to be moved?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am trying to fit a MMX polisport headlight to a 2011 YZ450F. However the ECU unit is in the way for the rear of the light. Has anyone else installed this light and have a solution? Can the ECU unit be moved?

Thanks gray. This must be a common problem for most for the MMX polisport headlight is not that bulky from behind. Moving the ECU seems bit of a task. Anyone out there got a headlight on a 2011 without moving the ECU. If so how?

Hi all,

I have been mucking around trying to get my headlight sorted. The acerbis LED type does not foul on the ECU, however the problem becomes the brake line clearance! The brake line grinds itself away on the sharp edges of the side of the head light assy. I have removed some material on the LHSof the head light- all the way back to the printed circuit board of the LED lights and refilled the void with DP100. That should give me enough clearance for it to work. I think it is still going to need some tweaking. I am going to try putting some black poly pipe around the brake line for added abrasion protection.

Which acerbis LED did you go with? Any pics fitted on the bike? The only way the polisport can be fitted is by making up some side extension plates so the light sits clear of ECU. But it does look sort of pox.

Does the acerbis put out a descent light?

I fitted an acerbis LED vision headlight assy. I took it for a blast today and the poly pipe around the brake line did the job. I had trouble finding a suitable glue for the polypipe, ended up using hot glue gun, did the trick. The headlight assy looks pretty cool. Im not sure how durable it's going to be though. I completely sealed it from the elements using clear silastic, cut up ice cream container ( behind the lamp holder) and ridiculous amounts of time!!! I bought some new high output LED lamps from jaycar. M16 I think they were. It should be bright enuff to detach the retina of any stray rabbits!!! I don't know why acerbis call them a LED vision when the main lamps are not LED?! Albeit the side plate lights are. Also of note is - you can have the headlight on and start the 2011 yz450 no worries.

Haven't worked out how to upload pix. Have a couple I can email if you want achudasko.

Cheers

You need to splice two wires into the coil between the radiator and frame on the RHS. I used an enduro wiring loom that has provisions for a headlight, tail and brake light and a horn. Some users are installing a switch for the headlight so that they can disable the the headlight at start to ensure the ECU/ CDI can provide enough grunt to fire the beast into life. IMO I don't believe you need the switching when you use a LED headlight because they use bugger all power.

All up, you could have the system installed and bike reassembled in a few hours and a few beers.

Yes the OEM stator provides enough power to drive my lighting system.

Cheers

Thanks stormin. Interested to see what yours looks like on the bike.

Mines all wired up and working but need to sort out a better fitting headlight. I was considering the acerbis single globe led vision HP headlight.

Pics or know where to find a writeup on doing this? Mainly need to know what wires to splice and where.

I am interested in the diagram also. Will the generator power a 35 watt light, as LED is not street legal in PA.

Specifically, we need to use a 35 watt bulb with Hi/Low beam and all.

I would be using a BAJA kit and do the conversion.

Thanks

So, did you end up re-positioning the ECU to make the Polisport headlight mount properly?

I looked for ways to re-position the ECU higher on the steering tube to gain clearance for the headlight, but found that the space it can be shifted up is so limited it still didn't buy enough room to mount the Polisport MMX headlight. I was pulling my hair ot trying to figure out how Adam Riemann managed to mount this headlight on his off-road 2011 YZ 450

. I contacted him via e-mail and he shared that he had to hack off the majority of the headlight housing to make it clear the ECU and then he attached a flat panel with LEDs in place of the halogen bulb assembly (Hmmmm....) So rather than take this approach, I am going to the Polisport HMX (http://www.polisport.com/motorbikes/produtos.php?ID=544) which has 2 LED lights. The LED lights draw MUCH less power and the HMX headlight has a much flatter profile which I am told doesn't interfere with the ECU (fingers crossed). I also purchased an on-off switch, and a longer front brake line (from a 2012 WR 450) to provide clearance around the headlight. Still waiting for some of my parts to arrive, but will post once I get this all set up!

I found another thread on this topic which you may want to check out. https://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/990495-head-light-on-a-yz450f/

Cool thanks for the response...I think I still may be forced into fitting an MMX somehow but I haven't ordered anything or tried anything at all yet. Need to plate my YZ here in MI and there is snow on the ground right now. LED's are not DOT approved in MI, may just have to rig something up and swap back after inspection, haha.

Either way, let me know how the install goes on that HMX.
