What are some of the set ups you guys are using to keep the bike safe while in haul? I really like the boltiton set up but is to wide for a 5x8.

Here is what I have now:

Don't be afraid to use straps. Usually I have two on the back too just to make me feel like its more secured. The front wheels just get placed in between two two by fours layed flat and
screwed on the floor. That's all I do and haven't had problems.

I called http://www.boltiton.com/ and they will make anysize width that you want. I think this would be a great add on to any utility trailer as you can take it off easy to use for other things.

Get some c channel and weld it on the front rail and you pretty much have what they have. It's only gonna take away 4 inches or less of cargo space length wise but will not cost 300+ dollars. I don't think I would ever pay over 300 dollars for a rack system that goes in a utility trailer. I could maybe understand putting it in a enclosed trailer but for 300 dollars you could find a dedicated bike trailer. Or if you have to absolutely have every inch of your trailer to use get one of these.... http://pitposse.com/chrewhch.html

I just think their are better options out there for significantly less money.

Use 4 straps two on bars and 2 on subframe.  Bolt 2 pieces of 2x4 or sqaure tubing slightly wider than your front tire so it fits into a groove and wont twist right or left along the rail.  I wouldn't wast money on those bolt on rails and other links posted....use the moneyon some nice tie downs and a new DEP pipe

We all need it sometimes. I'm completely happy with my free method of chocking/securing my bikes front wheel. It's basically what chris hammer is saying also. Buy a good set of straps and you'll be fine.

We've carried our bikes with a Utility trailer for years and the only problem we've ever had was with the front wheel sometimes turning, which as you can guess makes things unstable..... With the most recent trailer we've been using (a 5x8) there was 2 wheel chocks already mounted in there....Works perfect!!! We haul 2 bikes each time and use 2 straps on each, just on the front......

I tie each side of the handle bars to eye hooks bolted through the floor with washers on either side for extra surface area through the wood. I've also welded a few tie down points on the trailer frame as well. A large strap runs over the swing arm and usually through the rear wheel across the trailer, usually serving two bikes. Finally, I tie a piece of strap through the wheel to the frame. I figure this way I have a back-up if one strap should fail, there's at least one other point of failure before the bike falls off the trailer.

I use a utility trailer with the Norther Tool chock that's got a fixed base plate and removable chock.  Still  mostly flat when the chock is off, but easy to mount it up when its needed again.  Usually can save 20% with a coupon for less than $50 out the door.

Posted ImageHere is my 5x10. If you don't look at the section I have for the bike across the front then the 3 bikes are sitting in a 5x8.

So all of the front tires went in to channel iron that I bent and welded. Then one day my neighbor said he was throwing away two wheel chocks as they did not fit his new Harleys so those are the two outside ones. Also under the railings I welded on chainlinks all over the place so you can hook up a tie down at random. With this set up I have actuall loaded 4 bikes in the 5x8 section. If you put them head to toe using the tailgate as a wheel chock along with a board (as mentioned above) to keep the tires from turning you surprisingly can fir 4 full size bikes with no problem. 5 if you put one across the front like mine.

Anyways all of my tire chocks are bolted through the wood so they can be removed for hauling other things. Pretty easy set up, fast and easy.

One thing I might suggest is that you put wood on the side rails. This allows you to have your swingarm pulled tight to it for the outside bikes and then 1 tiedown holding it tight to the rail. Huge space saver and it gets the bikes as far apart as possible.

Good luck and post up finished photos.
