But, to me, 24:1 is pretty thick. True meaning of the word "smoker". But if you have any doubts about lubrication, Chokey is right. It will make your internals last a long time.

Especially at half past slow...j/k old man.
Come on SAPPERS, you know as well as I do that with proper jetting a fully warmed up two-stroke won't produce any visible smoke even at 20:1.

It still amazes me at how many people think that's just "so much oil". Think about it. If you run two gallons of gas mixed at 32:1 through your engine, that means that your engine only received 8 ounces of oil during that entire time. A four-stroke, with it's recirculating system, would have bathed the crank and piston with gallons of the stuff over the course of burning two gallons of gas. And people wonder why their two-strokes wear out fast???

I love the oil on the crank but worried a little about the primitive ignition not firing to get the charge hot enough for good flame travel.
Find me somewhere to bolt on some MSD spark and I'd go to 16 to 1 on the oil.

Still researching and wanting to try 20 to 1 (compression) running alcohol, might need a hare scramble tank though.

At your compression levels you might have a legitimate worry about the ignition. For normal engines it's not an issue. I've run as much as 18:1 plenty of times in my life.

Dammit Chokey. You're beginning to talk me into mixing at your ratio just to try it. Amsoil will be happy though. Using a gallon of oil a week. But the 250 is just freshly rebuilt and maybe from now on, I'm gonna try 24:1 and see how far I can push this one. I'll probably mix my pump fuel & VP110 50/50 instead of 70/30 just to be safe. Remember, my bikes aren't stock. The 250's CR is about 15:1.

I know you don't agree with me, but in my opinion, all the mods you have done to your engines is even more reason why you should be running more oil. Higher compression and higher rpms is more stress and load on everything. There's a reason why most Factory two-strokes were run with 18:1-20:1 ratios.

Well, tonight I have to put in a new crank because the new one I put in is apparently not balanced correctly so Hotrods sent me a new one.

We have a race this weekend and I'm gonna mix up at 24:1 and stick with 70/30, 93/110. We give it a go till the next rebuild. I'm not disagreeing with you at all. I'm sure it'll pay off. you had a very good point I never really contemplated. 8oz oil to 2 gal of gas. Not much oil there.

Be ready to lean one on the main, less fuel coming in.

He may need to go slightly richer, not leaner.

Depends on how sharp the jetting is to start with.

Definately richer, and i've also heard many times that the peak power of a two stroke is reached at 12:1. I cant remember what company did this study but i'll try to find and send a link. I always run at 32:1, no matter what. Every now and then if I know i'll be riding it hard i'll go something like 28:1

Probably because of the good porting work I'm getting, I'm used to having to go leaner I guess. My bad.

I'm not sure what's in my tank now, but I mixed up my gas (93 octane, highest I could get) and oil (motul) at 32:1...gonna try that...but right now I'm waiting for a K & N air filter to arrive...

EDIT: not sure what's in my tank now because I just got this bike

Just an FYI, a K&N is a poor choice if filters for a dirt bike. They let a pretty substantial amount of very fine particles through, there are many threads about it on TT.

I agree, I use UNI, or twin air.

hmmmmmmmm well I guess nothing's worse than one that's covered in solid black with holes in it (what it used to be)...Once that wears out I might try a Twin Air...

Well honestly I have nothing bad to say about k and n. The carbs are typicaly just as dirty as any other filter with the same hours. They just wear out quicker for me. I've noticed the uni's last a long time if taken care of properly.

I never find even a spec of dirt inside my intake tract. Perhaps you need to learn better filter maintenance methods?

I use strictly twin air and I use filter skins as well. I get 3 packs real cheap from a shop I deal with. About $4 / pack. My air box is spotless and I only have to clean filter once in awhile. Just pull off the skin and install a new one. t sometimes, the skin doesn't hold it all back and the filter needs cleaned.

right...so I'll just let this K & N ride for a while...then when it's time for a new one, I'll try a UNI of Twin Air.

I usually clean the carb twice a year, I was saying it looks about the same with any air filter.
