I have found two bikes that I am interested in buying as my first street bike...

A 2004 GSXR 600 for $3000

and a 2000 R6 for $3000

I don't really know much about street bikes, I race motocross but haven't had a street bike yet so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Might be a little to much for a first bike...even though you do have dirt experience. How old are you? Insurance for bikes is really high for people under twenty-five.

I think I would be fine on a 600, I have been riding dirt bikes since I was 3 years old. I am 17 and with the money I would be saving on gas would pay for insurance..lol

But do you know how much insurance would be? Expect it to cost over $1000. Street is different from dirt riding. I stand by my first post.

Also, the GXSR is actually $4000, and the R6 is $3100.

Check the NADA values for the bike, before you buy any bike though.

I got the guy with the GSXR down to $3000, and the guy with the R6 sounds firm on 3g also...

Are you sure that insurance would be over a grand? I would only be riding it for about 5 months of the year.....

Doesn't matter how long you would be riding. You can't just cancel your insurance. You can put it on a 'hold' type of thing, but then you can't ride it if there is a nice day...because you won't have full coverage...how old are you? I suggest starting with something smaller. Insurance will be better priced too. Look up the SV650.

Dunno how it is there in Nova Scotia, but at 17 here in the States, insurance rates depend on how good your parents' record is. You would be on their policy until you turn 18, then you could get your own. $1000 pr year for basic liability for an 18 yr old, with their own policy on a 600, is pretty norm. Full coverage can be upwards of 3 times that much.

Jeez....I didn't realize how much insurance can be on a bike....I will have to check into my insurance company so they can give me an idea of how much its going to cost.

Insurance kept me off street bikes for years. When I was 19 I was looking between an fz6 and ninja 650. With a squeaky clean record insurance was $330 per month, it was less for a 500, but still pricy. A superbike will be more. One way to get around it is get an older bike. I got a 82 kawi 750 (superbike of the time) and full insurance with medical is $50 per month (i'm 26 now). It may not be as fast as the new bikes but its easier to work on and a blast to ride!

From what I've heard, insurance on sportbikes is worse in Canada.  I paid almost $2,000/year in 1994 for full coverage on an F2.
